- Complete and pass a certified CPR/First Aide/AED Training course prior to the start of the Summer Academy.
- Contribute and work toward building collective and harmonious working relationships among Resident Advisors/Instructional Aides, Head Resident Advisors, Resident Life Coordinator, Academic Coordinator, Teaching Staff, Program Director and the students.
- Male RAs will oversee male students, and female RAs will oversee females for gender-based or physical complaints/problems.
- Assess students academic, emotional and social needs. Counsel with students on a daily basis regarding academic progress, daily class assignments/activities and emotional/physical well-being.
- Review files of assigned students to know students needs and help build a more effective connection..
- Attend pre-program staff trainings and daily and weekly staff meetings.
- Participate and assist in the planning, coordination, communication, and implementation of all social, cultural and recreational events.
- Collaborate with the Teaching Assistants to assist students with completion of daily classroom assignments, projects, and homework during afternoon supervised-study sessions during commuter and residential components.
- Under the guidance of the Resident Life Coordinator and the direction of the Head Residential Advisors, supervise and assist small-group study sessions during the evening, maintaining a conducive study atmosphere and tutoring students in academic courses as appropriate.
- Report to HRA regarding problems, functions and disciplinary measures during program activities and field experiences.
- Provide academic and personal guidance to assigned students.
- Maintain student discipline and enforce all program rules and regulations.
- Supervise students at all times to ensure their safety and well-being.
- Monitor students at mealtime for SFSP requirements and maintain data logs.
- On a rotational schedule, be on call 24-hours a day during the residential component of the program.
- Maintain constant communication with program staff and students to ensure efficient program operation.
- Report any problems relating to staff or students to the HRA or administrative staff.
- Report immediately to the HRA and Resident Life Coordinator in the event of serious student misbehavior or any time-sensitive issues, critical incidents/emergencies.
- Must be able to communicate constructively and effectively.
- Must be sensitive, respectful, and understanding of the needs of economically and academically disadvantaged, ethnically diverse high school students.
- Must be able to establish and maintain a trusting and productive working relationship with program students and staff.

- Six months of experience performing support services for an instructional program (preparing, producing, dispensing or storing materials, supplies or equipment);
- OR equivalent to one year of experience in ordering, purchasing, accounting or in office work related to technical materials, supplies or equipment or in a similar office environment;
- OR equivalent to two-years of college with 16-units in courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies or equipment.
- Must be in good academic standing at an academic, accredited institution or have completed a Bachelors degree.
- Experience working with low-income high schools students is highly desirable
- Valid California Drivers License is preferred.
- Experience with TRIO Programs is highly desirable.
- Experience with early outreach programs.
- Experience working with students from different cultural backgrounds.
- Experience working at a camp or in a residential setting.
- Fluency in a language other than English that the UB/HCOP student population speaks.
- Candidate must reside in California or live in a commutable distance from SDSU at time of hire.

The San Diego State University Institute for Transformative Education promotes college access and completion for under-served students through excellence and innovation in education. SDSU Upward Bound-HCO educational opportunity programs funded by the U.S. Department of Education and the California Medicine Scholars to assist eligible high school students pursue and complete postsecondary programs of education. There are 13 staff members in the Academic Year and approximately 31 during the Six-Week Summer Academy. UB-HCO is funded to serve 167 students (93 UB Classic and 84 UB STAR) during the Academic Year and 90 students (50 UB Classic and 40 UB STAR) during the Six-Week Summer Academy. The purpose of SDSU Upward Bound is to develop in students the motivation and skills to assist them to pursue and complete a program of postsecondary education. The purpose of California Medicine Scholars is to create pathways for underserved students to become physicians.
The SDSU Institute for Transformative Education supported by the SDSU Research Foundation is seeking Resident Advisors/Instructional Aides to supervise, advise, and support high school students during our summer academy. The Institutes goal is to assist low-income and/or first-generation college students currently in high school to prepare for success in college. The six-week summer academy provides participants with fast-paced, intensive academic coursework and other cultural enrichment activities within a hybrid delivery system consisting of online, commuter days, and in a residential setting. Each Resident Advisor is assigned 10-12 students and lives in the residence hall for the last two weeks of the program; Resident Advisors receive room and board. During the non-residential component of the academy, the Residential Advisor/Instructional Aide will support the students either online or in the classroom for their academic needs and social/emotional needs. During virtual and commuter time, the Residential Advisor/Instructional Aide will get to know the students, connect students to their application information and their needs for both health and mental well-being. During the residential component of the academy the Residential Advisor will focus on the students afternoon activities and offer academic support when needed.
