We aim to address and eliminate health inequities for our communities by rooting our clinical practice in core foundational intersectional frameworks of anti-racism, self-determination, harm reduction, and reproductive and disability justice. As a community clinic, we believe our communities are best served by and for us; that's why community outreach, engagement, and leadership development are central to our mission of community care and mutual aid. Lastly, we commit to increasing access to culturally responsive care beyond our walls through provider training and education, and policy advocacy.
    Job Summary

    The Supervising Psychiatrist is primarily responsible for the supervision of psychiatrists and psychiatric nurse practitioners who provide psychiatric care, medication management and intervention services to Lyon-Martin clients. The Supervising Psychiatrist is a member of the leadership team, providing organizational oversight and contributing to strategic planning. The Supervising Psychiatric shall be an active member of and provide support for the integrated healthcare team. The Supervising Psychiatrist may also provide supervision to fellows, residents, and students as appropriate, as well as consultative support to providers as needed, including training. As a specialist in queer, trans, and intersex (QTI) care, Lyon-Martin mental health providers are expected to have experience and a commitment to LBGTQIA+ community health care.

    The Supervising Psychiatrist may also provide medication management and therapy services directly if appropriate, especially if covering for their team or assisting with complex cases, including but not limited to psychiatric evaluation, diagnosis and medication management, short term and long term psychotherapy, crisis intervention, brief behavioral interventions, psychosocial assessments for gender affirming surgery, group psychotherapy, appropriate internal/external referrals, and clinical case management. The Psychiatrist is expected to maintain a high degree of professional competence, the highest possible ethical standards, and the ability to work collaboratively as part of an integrated health care team. This position may be required to work some evenings.

    This position is fully remote and on-call.

    Key Responsibilities

    Supervisory Responsibilities:
    • In collaboration with the Medical Director and Mental Health Director, develops and implements policies and procedures pertaining to the Psychiatry Department.
    • Enters into Furnishing and Privileging Agreement with Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner(s).
    • Provides clinical leadership, supervision and oversight to Psychiatrists, Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners, advanced practice providers, nurses, and interns/students.
    • Promotes and enhances integrated team-based and patient-centered care.
    • Ensures that in the absence of a Psychiatrist or Psych NP, that a mechanism is established so that coverage is available to review lab and diagnostic reports, prescriptions, and follow up on psychiatric care, stepping in themselves with no coverage exists.
    • Thorough supervision of, and promotion of continuous quality improvement efforts.
    • Hires, on-boards, trains, supports, disciplines, and terminates psychiatrists and psychiatric nurse practitioners.
    • In collaboration with Medical Director and Mental Health Director, monitors performance during initial employment and thereafter through chart audits, utilization review, peer review and annual performance appraisal of all psychiatrists and psychiatric nurse practitioners.
    • Provides weekly one-on-one supervision for all psychiatrists and psychiatric nurse practitioners
    • Participates in all leadership team and operations activities, as available.
    Quality/Clinical Care Responsibilities
    • As needed, provides comprehensive care, within the scope of credentialed privileges, to Lyon-Martin clients.
    • Ensures supervisees gather, analyze and interpret patients' histories, records, symptoms, physical findings, or diagnostic information to develop appropriate diagnoses.
    • Ensures supervisees appropriately follow-up on all aspects of ordered care (e.g., specialty referrals, laboratory results, radiology reports, etc.).
    • Ensures supervisees prescribe, direct, and administer psychotherapeutic treatments or medications to treat mental, emotional, or behavioral conditions.
    • Designs individualized care plans for patients. Collaborates with medical providers, mental health providers, and other professionals to discuss treatment plans and progress.
    • Thinks critically to provide innovative interventions for those resistant to past treatment attempts.
    • Ensures supervisees maintain complete and detailed records of patients' health care plans and prognosis, documenting care in a timely manner and following charting protocols (same day for closing notes and urgent in basket tasks, 72 hours maximum for routine in basket tasks).
    • Ensures supervisees develop a continuity panel of clients.
    • Ensures supervisees complete patient sessions in a timely manner.
    • Demonstrates strong clinical knowledge of and commitment to healthcare for trans and gender non-conforming people, LGBTQIA+ communities, and cis-gender women.
    • Completes gender affirming procedure assessments when needed and writes letters of support for insurance and surgeon approval in a timely manner.
    • Ensures supervisees maintain appropriate boundaries with clients, especially when experiencing transference and countertransference.
    • Attends monthly Collaborative Care meetings, All Staff meetings, and ad hoc mental health team meetings, as available.
    • Maintains familiarity with evidence-based practices and standardized procedures, utilizing them to guide care. Researches literature to constantly evolve clinical practice.
    • Works collaboratively with mental health and medical staff to facilitate integration between primary care and mental health to improve patient outcomes.
    • Along with colleagues, assists in continuous quality improvement through on-going needs assessment and problem solving.
    • Maintains availability for various administrative/clinical duties. Such duties may include case presentations; in-service training to staff; supervision of students, interns, residents.
    • Obtains and maintains CA licensure and BLS certification.
    • Completes all mandatory trainings on an annual basis.
    • Complies with all aspects of Lyon-Martin Policies and Procedures applicable as well as all agreements with insurers and other entities that contain provisions applicable to or affecting the duties and responsibilities of staff; and all applicable statutes, regulations, governmental agency guidelines, and non-governmental oversight body requirements that place requirements on Lyon-Martin.
    • Ensures Psych team meets benchmarks for applicable visit numbers and quality indicators as assigned (expectation is 7 scheduled visits per half day with the exception of intake/evaluation appointments which are 1 hour each).
    • Ensures the completion of letters of support for surgery within 1 month after assessment is complete.
    • Exhibits strong initiative and enthusiasm and willingness to pitch in whenever needed.
    • Along with colleagues, assists in continuous quality improvement through on-going problem/needs identification and problem solving and, as requested, acts as a champion of change and a leader for improvement activities.
    And, other duties as assigned.

    Education, Knowledge, Skills:

    Required:
    • M.D. or D. O. degree from an accredited United States medical school.
    • Successful completion of internship and residency in psychiatry with specific experience managing substance use disorder and ADHD.
    • Board Certified in Psychiatry.
    • Valid and active California medical license, without any limitations on license to practice in specialty.
    • Eligible to participate in the CMS Medicaid/Medicare reimbursement programs.
    • At least 5 years experience practicing as a Psychiatrist.
    • At least 2 years experience in supervising other Psychiatric providers.
    • Experience using harm reduction and trauma-informed care models within psychiatry practice.
    • Current BLS/ACLS certificate or recertification within 2 months of hire.
    • Culturally sensitive/humble and able to work with a diverse population
    • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, specifically Word, Outlook, internet applications, zoom, computer technology, and phone use
    • Experience working with lesbian, bisexual, transgender, gender non-conforming, non-binary, and intersex communities.
    • Experience working with populations with varying disabilities, racial, ethnic and cultural backgrounds and economic statuses.
    • Experience working with people who do sex work, those experiencing homelessness, people who have challenges with mental illness, people who use drugs, those of with a history of incarceration, sex workers, people of varying ages.
    • An interest in and commitment to gender affirming health care, abortion, and health care access for underserved populations.
    Desired:
