    Make a Lasting Impact on Families in Your Community

    Are you a Registered Dietitian who believes nutrition is foundational to lifelong health? As a Public Health Nutritionist II - WIC, you will directly support pregnant individuals, infants, and young children across Oakland County by delivering evidence-based nutrition counseling, education, and facilitate access to other services to that improves health outcomes where it matters most.

    This role blends clinical expertise, public health impact, education, and community engagement.

    What You'll Do

    Provide Direct Nutrition Care

    • Deliver individualized nutrition counseling for pregnant and postpartum clients, infants, and young children.
    • Conduct nutritional, growth and development screenings to identify nutritional risk and provide appropriate intervention.
    • Perform dietary assessments.
    • Develop therapeutic and non-therapeutic meal plans tailored to practical family preferences, medical needs, and culturally responsive guidance.
    • Develop individual care plans and coordinate specialized feeding prescriptions with medical providers for high-risk clients.
    • Maintain accurate electronic health records and documentation.

    Educate & Empower

    • Lead engaging nutrition education sessions for expectant parents, families, and individuals.
    • Create and adapt educational materials that meet the needs of diverse populations.
    • Support breastfeeding promotion and maternal-child health initiatives.
    • Provide consultation to community organizations to strengthen nutrition access.

    Strengthen Public Health Programs

    • Assist in developing and implementing Countywide nutrition initiatives.
    • Strengthen community health and safety by offering wraparound services to families.
    • Participate in activities that address food insecurity in Oakland County.

    Lead & Collaborate

    • Provide guidance and support to other staff and students.
    • Collaborate with nurses, health educators, and community partners to ensure comprehensive care.
    • Participate in professional development to stay current with best practices in dietetics and public health nutrition.

    Minimum Qualifications

    EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS & ABILITIES

    A. REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Possess a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Foods and Nutrition, Dietetics, or a closely related field of study.

    NOTE: Applicants possessing transcripts from a college or university outside of the United States will be required to provide documentation of degree equivalency from a member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services ). The degree evaluation will be required for application processing.

    2. Be certified as a Registered Dietitian by the Commission on Dietetic Registration.

    3. Have had at least one (1) year of full‐time professional dietetics work experience in a public health or out‐patient dietetic setting.

    NOTE: A Master's Degree in Public Health Nutrition, Foods and Nutrition, Dietetics, or a closely related field from an accredited college or university may be substituted for one (1) year of the dietetic experience requirements.

    4. Possess a valid United States motor vehicle operator's or chauffeur's license. Out of Country driver's license holders will be required to obtain the appropriate valid State of Michigan driver's license before the hire date.

    5. Pass the complete examination, including the employment medical, established for this classification.

    6. Successfully complete the six month probationary period.

    SUPERVISION EXERCISED

    May function as a leader over lower level employees by assigning, assisting, and checking work.

    ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

    Provides nutritional counseling in therapeutic and normal nutrition education and meal planning for selected populations of County residents enrolled in Health Division nutrition programs, clinics, and classes.

    Conducts nutritional and biometric screening and assessments, triages clients for high-risk nutrition assessment and intervention.

    Refers nutrition program clients to other Health Division, County or community programs for appropriate services.

    Assists in providing consultation to area institutions, community organizations and alternative community feeding programs to promote a comprehensive nutrition program.

    Conducts home visits when assigned to some program areas for the delivery of nutrition care.

    Participates in teaching nutrition classes for groups with priority health needs such as diabetics, expectant parents, hypertensives, low-income families, and senior citizens.

    Maintains records and reports pertaining to individual client services.

    Assists in collecting data for studies and investigations to evaluate local nutrition needs and resources in comparison to existing services and program objectives.

    Prepares and presents oral and written technical reports to Health Division staff, Division Administrators, and other community organizations.

    Conducts computerized nutritional analysis of client/group food intake records and provides interpretation of results.

    Reviews and utilizes computerized nutritional analysis of client/group food intake records and selects and provides interpretation materials.

    Assists in reviewing, evaluating, and recommending current professional resource materials for utilization in a public health nutrition education program.

    Assists in preparing teaching aides for group training programs and classroom or community education.

    Participates in professional meetings and/or on‐going educational programs to maintain familiarity with current principles and practices of dietetics and nutrition.

    Assists in quality assurance and public health nutrition program evaluation endeavors.

    Utilizes current Countywide and/or department specific software to complete assignments.

    ADDITIONAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

    Assists in providing training and evaluation experience for students enrolled in health-related intern programs.

    Assists in providing training, technical guidance and consultation regarding nutrition to other Health Division personnel.

    ESSENTIAL MENTAL & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

    Ability to effectively communicate to accurately convey information.

    Ability to operate a motor vehicle and/or be a passenger.

    WORKING CONDITIONS

    Work is performed in a typical office environment.

    May participate in activities that require driving or being a passenger in an automobile or bus.

    IMPORTANT NOTE: The primary purpose of this job description is to set a fair and equitable salary range for this job classification.     1. Considerable knowledge of and ability to utilize the principles, methods, and materials of modern dietetic practice.

    2. Considerable knowledge of the practices, procedures, and specialized terminology relating to therapeutic, educational and administrative dietetics.

    3. Considerable ability to apply the principles of dietetics and nutrition to the planning of therapeutic and normal diets.

    4. Considerable ability to communicate with public health program staff, volunteers, referred clients, and other groups and individuals relative to dietary consultation or education.

    5. Considerable ability to exercise mature judgment and initiative in analyzing problems and recommending solutions.

    6. Considerable ability to prepare and present oral and written technical reports to supervisors, staff, and the general public.

    7. Considerable ability to maintain administrative dietary reports and records relating to educational programs, nutritional evaluations, and public health regulations and procedures.

    8. Considerable knowledge of principles and practices of public health and/or community nutrition.

    9. Considerable knowledge of public health program planning and evaluation principles.

    10. Ability to develop public health nutrition program action plan.

    11. Ability to assist in quality assurance and public health nutrition program evaluations.

    12. Reasonable ability to utilize current word processing, spreadsheet, database, e-mail and Internet software.

    13. Excellent written and oral communication skills.

    14. Highly organized with a strong attention to detail.

    C. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

    Must maintain registration with the Commission on Dietetic Registration as a Registered Dietitian.

    Must maintain a valid United States motor vehicle operator's or chauffeur's license.

    Must submit to immunizations as required by the Health Division, and to periodic tuberculin skin tests or chest x‐rays at County expense.
