    Job Purpose:


    Progress Rail Services Corporation, a Caterpillar Company and a leading provider of services to the Railroad industry in the US, Canada, Mexico, and Brazil, seeks an INTERN SOFTWARE ENGINEER at our facility in Independence, MO.


    The successful candidate will be responsible for embedded software application solutions, software updates for Quality improvements, and applications for Carborne, Data Acquisition and Train Inspection products.

    The candidate will work closely with Engineering personnel, Product Management, and customers in requirements gathering and software design and development.

    Organizational skills and the ability to multi-task in a fast paced environment are a must.

    Responsibilities:

    • As a software engineer intern you will be part of a team that designs, develops, documents, tests, and debugs embedded and application software;
    • This position will learn our current products through hands on applications within engineering as well as all manufacturing processes;
    • This position will assist in building solutions to solve complex problems while working through a software development release process to support customer goals;
    • This position will also support research, engineering, and development of innovative solutions to support issue resolution and feature updates to our current product line;
    • Coordinate requirements and application design with product management, field engineering, and customers.

    Qualifications and Experience:

    Requirements:

    • Currently enrolled and in good standing at an accredited college or university, pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent field;
    • Experience or knowledge of Linux, Visual Studio, QNX, C/C++, C#, .NET, and database management tools;
    • Candidate must have initiative and a driven, high-performance work ethic;
    • Candidate must work well in a high-energy team environment;
    • Solid communication skills.

    Essential and Physical Activities Functions:

    • Strength - Position typically involves work in an office environment with frequent visits to manufacturing environment. Frequent/constant sitting. Occasional standing and walking. Occasional light- to medium­ level lifting or carrying (up to 30 pounds);
    • Motion - Position regularly requires standard motions associated with working in an office environment;
    • Vision/Hearing Requirements - Frequent verbal communications, including both talking and hearing;
    • Work Environment - Position is typically located in an office environment with occasional visits to an industrial environment which may include a non-temperature-controlled environment, as well as exposure to noise (85+ decibels), occasional exposure to temperature changes, heavy machinery and other hazardous working conditions requiring the use of PPE;
    • Emotional Demands - Very high level of responsibility. Must be able to coordinate diverse aspects of a project. Requires significant interpersonal skills while sustaining very high standards. Domestic and international travel as required;
    • Safety - Position may occasionally require the use of Personal Protective Equipment during visits to industrial areas.
