    Job Description


    The Optical Engineer II position is responsible for conducting optical designs and tolerance analysis, writing work instructions and other documentation, and providing engineering support to the manufacturing areas of the facility (e.g., manufacturing, assembly, metrology).

    More autonomy and mentoring of less experienced engineers or technicians is expected.

    Although the location of the position is in Rochester, NY, from time to time it may be required to undertake duties at other Thorlabs locations.

    Essential Job Functions

    include the following, but are not limited to:
    Design precision multi-element lens systems, including tolerance analysis, metrology requirements, assembly procedures and mechanical design support.
    Routinely perform analyses, such as optical simulation, image simulation, and illumination modeling on lens systems.
    Perform metrology on critical lenses, systems and sub-components when required
    Follow prototype designs from conception through manufacture.

    Responsible for all related production documentation, which includes, bills of material, engineering drawings, testing requirements, tooling and specification of coatings.

    Interact with production personnel to define and solve

    manufacturing/design

    issues and implement cost reduction ideas with regard to new and current company products.
    Mentors peers, technicians, or new hires
    Prepare technical data such as qualification test procedures, acceptance test procedures, reports, etc.
    Interact with vendors and purchasers concerning supplied and proposed components.

    Coordinate as required with other internal groups including Sales, Accounting personnel, Fabrication, Technical Marketing, Technical Support, OEM Team, Management, Planning, and Assembly.

    Acts as a supporting technical expert for the company for both internal and external customers.
    Stay current on industry trends and techniques relating to optical design, imaging, and precision alignment.

    In addition to the essential functions and duties listed above, all positions are also responsible for:

    Meeting company standards pertaining to quantity and quality of work performed on an ongoing basis, performing all work related tasks in a manner that is in compliance with all Company policies and procedures.

    Adhering to Company policies, procedures, and directives regarding standards of workplace behavior in completing job duties and assignments.
    The Company retains the right to change or assign other duties to this position.

    Salary Range for this position:
    $84,100 - $120,000 Annually


    Physical Activities:
    This job involves office work, as well as, occasionally consulting on the shop floor. The employee may, on occasions, need to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.

    Requirements

    Experience:
    Minimum 4-6 years industrial experience or equivalent in Optical Design and Engineering


    Education:
    BS,MS or PHD in Optical Engineering, Optical Systems Engineering or equivalent


    Specialized Knowledge and Skills:
    Skilled in the use of Zemax design software, or equivalent
    Familiarity with Matlab, Python or other programing language

    Demonstrated technical background and hands on experience in such fields as optics, opto-mechanical design, laser optics, polarization, microscopy, and stray-light analysis.

    Hands on experience with optics including alignment, measurement, and testing
    Strong ability to take initiative
    Flexibility/adaptability

    in a dynamic environment
    Strong proficiency in MS office and communication skills
