    Overview

    Responsibilities


    The Lab Assistant-CPT properly identifies patients, performs phlebotomy as needed, and performs specimen processing within the laboratory while maintaining proper patient identification throughout the process.

    Assists the laboratory team by performing various maintenance and clerical duties, and other assigned tasks and maintains the lab environment in a safe manner as required by regulatory agencies.

    Accountabilities 1.

    Appropriately uses AIDET (Acknowledge, Introduce, Duration, Explanation and Thank you) with each and every patient encounter prior to starting procedure.2.

    Correctly identifies patient, if possible, asks patient to state name and date of birth, and confirms armband is correct. Maintains proper patient identification in all work process (specimen collection, specimen processing, computer test ordering, result retrieval, filing, etc.)3. Performs venipuncture to collect blood specimens, and may perform skin puncture according to physician orders.

    Utilizes appropriate techniques during specimen collection and transport to maintain specimen integrity and minimize specimen rejections due to hemolysis clotting, QNS, etc.

    Follows applicable regulations, and policies and procedures, for specimen collection and labeling, ensuring a complete and accurate specimen for testing.4.

    Receives and processes all specimens in a timely manner according to priority according to regulatory and department protocols.

    Performs data entry of test requests, test information and patient information into the computer in an accurate and timely manner.

    Correctly performs all functions relative to computer entry of patient information, transport files, work lists, test orders and reporting of test results according to regulatory and department policies and procedures.5.

    Assists Clinical Lab Scientist (CLS) as requested, loads specimens on analyzers, prepares gram stain for positive blood cultures as required under the direction of a CLS or Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT).6.

    Performs a wide variety of clerical support functions such as answering phones, processing mail requests, filing, resolving problems with lab orders and faxing of reports as needed.

    Ensures paperwork is completed thoroughly with attention to detail.7. Performs and documents maintenance on instruments, equipment checks, temperature recordings and other maintenance records as required. Recognizes and responds appropriately and in a timely manner to readings outside of acceptable limits. Performs QA or QC monthly tallies.8. Picks up and transports specimens from patient care areas according to established schedules and as needed. Orders and stocks inventory supplies, ensuring rotation of stock is completed as needed.9. Maintains laboratory environment as required by regulatory agencies.

    Adheres to all safety procedures and uses proper protocol for handling specimens in accordance with infection control policies and procedures.10.

    Performs miscellaneous job related duties as assigned.

    Qualifications


    Education Background Required:

    • High School Diploma/GED

    Education Background Preferred:

    • AA degree or 24 college units in laboratory science courses.
    • Typing and Computer skills in a Windows environment preferred.
    Licensure, Registration, Certification


    • State of California Certified Phlebotomy Technician I (CPT I) or Phlebotomy Technician II (CPT II).
