    Sterile Processing Tech II

    Central Sterilization

    The Sterile Processing Tech II plays a crucial role in maintaining the highest standards of cleanliness and sterilization for surgical instruments and medical equipment. Key responsibilities include:

    • Cleaning and decontaminating surgical instruments and equipment according to established procedures.
    • Inspecting, assembling, packaging, and sterilizing medical devices following manufacturer recommendations and protocols.
    • Operating cleaning and sterilization equipment in accordance with manufacturer guidelines and established procedures.
    • Performing biological tests and maintaining recording devices on autoclaves.
    • Ensuring good working condition of instruments and sending them for repair or sharpening as needed.
    • Maintaining neat and orderly work areas and sterile fields during operating room activities.
    • Demonstrating knowledge and understanding of sterilization principles, asepsis, infection control, and universal safety precautions.
    • Preparing self and work area for emergencies such as fires and earthquakes.
    • Exercising organizational skills, cost-effectiveness, and quality assurance in job performance.
    • Effectively communicating with colleagues and supervisory staff to ensure effective operating room functioning.
    • Maintaining inventory of supplies and equipment and filling surgical case cart requisitions using the hospital computer system.
    • Adhering to established Hospital and departmental policies, protocols, procedures, and objectives.
    • Fostering professional, cooperative relationships with other staff members, physicians, patients, patient family members, and the public while ensuring confidentiality of patient information.
    • Assembling, inspecting, wrapping, and labeling O.R. sets according to department protocol and manufacturer recommendations.
    • Assisting in maintaining supply levels of required items and communicating with ordering personnel.
    • Articulating expertise in soaps and detergents, packaging methods, sterilization techniques, infection control practices, high-level disinfection practices, and safe practices in Sterile Processing.
    • Reporting broken instrumentation and equipment.
    • Independently operating all SPD equipment.
    • Able to handle flexible scopes after manual cleaning.
    • Serving as preceptor, mentor, and role model for other staff members and assisting with departmental orientation as required.

    Requirements

    • Minimum two years experience with surgical instrumentation required.
    • Minimum two years prior sterile processing or surgical tech experience required.
    • Completion of a Sterile Processing Program or surgical tech program required.
    • High School Graduate or equivalent required.
    • Associate's or Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution preferred.
    • Certified and Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) or Surgical Technologist Certification (CST) required.
    • CRCST required within 6 months of hire/transfer for Certified Surgical Technologists.
    • All certifications are required through HSPA.
    • Knowledge of specialty instruments and thorough knowledge of disinfecting and sterilization procedures required.
    • Current AHA BLS card required.
    • Fire Card (within 90 days of hire) required.

    This position is represented by SEIU-UHW and covered by the collective bargaining agreement.
