Summary

This full time Occupational Therapy position will provide inpatient (long term care and short stay rehab) and outpatient care for Veterans addressing general Occupational Therapy needs and serve as a subject matter in the area of lymphedema treatment.

Duties

The VA Midwest Health Care Network advocates for a Whole Health System of care in each of the Medical Centers. This is an approach to healthcare that empowers and equips people to take charge of their health and well-being and live their lives to the fullest. As an employee operating in a Whole Health System of care, you will operate in a model with three core elements, seeking to create a personalized health plan for each Veteran. This is done in the context of healing relationships and healing environments and a connection back to the Veteran's community. This aligns with the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) Mission Statement to Honor America's Veterans by providing exceptional health care that improves their health and well-being.

Major Duties include but are not limited to:

Independently plans, coordinates, and carries out Occupational Therapy evaluation and interventions for referred Veterans to restore function, compensate for dysfunction and improve quality of life and independence.

Evaluates the Veteran's needs for assistive devices, and adaptive appliances, recommends adjustments for prosthetic/orthotic devices and makes minor adjustments to obtain maximal functional benefits.

Receives Veteran referrals from appropriate source and assures that Veterans are scheduled for evaluation and treatment in a timely fashion.

Schedules Veterans for treatment, considering priority and frequency of care and coordinating schedules with other members of the treatment team.

Documents performance and timely treatment and achievement of treatment goals.

Assures all documentation is done in a timely manner as per documentation policy for all Veteran visits.

Serves as a consultant for other rehabilitation therapists regarding the delivery of Occupational Therapy services.

Functions on a multidisciplinary team, representing the Rehabilitation section by communicating directly with team members such as Veteran's physician, nursing personnel. social worker, dietitian, psychologist and other Rehabilitation disciplines involved with the Veteran's care.

Continues to maintain and learn advanced skills in this area by attending continuing education courses and training when applicable.

Participates in process improvement projects in the rehabilitation service as well as throughout the healthcare system as appropriate.

Reviews documentation submitted by outside medical providers on behalf of the Veterans, making recommendations to the care team as appropriate.

May provide direct supervision and training to students assigned to the Occupational Therapy program.

Provides orientation on Occupational Therapy to Medical Center employees, volunteers, and visitors on request.
