    Job Description Summary:


    Responsible for the overall regulatory operations of all laboratories and operations and administration of the lab, managing the ordering process including assignment and reconciliation of appropriate accounts of all research laboratories run in the division, as well as overseeing common laboratory safety and other regulation requirements.

    Responsibilities include managing, planning, and coordinating the work of staff for these areas and others such as work-study students.

    Required Qualifications


    Education:

    • Master's degree in biological sciences or related field.

    Work Experience:

    • Three years of relevant work-related experience including significant evidence of research productivity such as publications, presentations, or a tangible contributory role in grants as evidenced by application materials.
    • Supervisory experience.
    Preferred Qualifications


    Education:
    Ph.
    D. in Molecular/Cellular Biology, Biochemistry, or a related field.


    Work Experience:
    Extensive knowledge of policies, practices, and procedures applicable to laboratory operation.

    Job Description


    • Support research activities at the University and work under the direction of the Division Director.
    • Engaging in entrepreneurial activities regarding research resources in the division and needs to develop and execute a business plan for possible commercialization of human airway epithelial cells and other research business endeavors for the division.
    • Manages and accounts for grant money allocations and expenditures for research supplies and equipment according to supply and equipment budgets in collaboration with the senior administrator. This includes tracking of orders, payments, and invoices,
    • Ensure proper maintenance of equipment including delegation of duties and ordering of supplies for all laboratories.
    • Plans, directs, and coordinates the work of staff in proper tissue culture techniques, and specialized procedures for growth and differentiation of airway epithelial cells and other cells used in the laboratories.
    • Innovate new techniques in direct collaboration with scientists and expand core functions for other cells if the opportunity arises.
    • Provide expertise for these functions within the division and to collaborating sites at the University, in the United States and abroad.
    • Maintains confidentiality of all patient information according to federal, state, and local guidelines and regulations (HIPM).
    • Ensures that environment conditions of the laboratory are appropriate and staff is protected from physical, chemical, and biological hazards.

    • Coordinates the laboratory inspection, update laboratory records, and ensures compliance with state and federal regulations including CITI, OSHA and other required certifications.
    • Ensure that all recovered tissues are processed for histology; and that records are kept on blocks, sections, and images.
    • Ensures and supervise preparation and quality control of media preparation and culture reagents.
    • Supervise, train, and execute special techniques including commonly used techniques in the laboratory (western blot, immunohistochemistry, lentiviruses production, transfections and infection using lentiviruses etc.). Special techniques include the measurements of ciliary beat frequency, airway surface liquid measurements in cell cultures, real-time analysis of fluorescence and cAMP-mediated regulation of ciliary motility using quantitative video microscopy.
    • Ensures proper shipping of diagnostic materials in compliance with federal regulations, including proper certification for all personnel involved.
    • Make recommendations regarding hiring, discipline, and promotion of staff.
    • Perform other duties as required by the Department Chair or Division Director.

    Compensation Statement:
    The pay range listed for this position is determined by our compensation program using market data and salary benchmarking.

    A combination of factors is considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, education, experience and training, qualifications relative to the requirements of the position, and funding.

    At the University of Kansas Medical Center, a reasonable estimate for the starting pay range will be the minimum to midpoint of the posted range, taking into account the combination of factors listed above.
