    Description

    The faculty physician is responsible for the care of patients in the hospital and clinics, as well as research, educational and advocacy initiatives as determined by the Division Chief and/or the Center leadership.

    Medical Doctor (M.Medical degree from an accredited medical school. (Minimum Work Experience
    0 years Completion of required residency and fellowship training. (Knowledge of current principles, methods and procedures for the delivery of medical evaluation, diagnosis and treatment in the area of expertise
    Knowledge of legal and ethical standards for the delivery of medical care

    Ability to incorporate ethical concepts into patient care and discuss these with the patient, family, and other members of the health care team.

    Ability to supervise, advise, educate and train clinical professionals and/or students in area of expertise with respect to their level of training.

    Ability to maintain quality, safety, and/or infection control standards.
    Ability to navigate and use electronic medical record and smart phone technology for placing and responding to calls and texting
    Fully licensed and credentialed attending staff category physician on the medical staff of Children's National Medical Center.

    Upon Hire (Required) Board eligible/certified in anesthesiology and in pediatric anesthesiology with the expectation that the employee will be board certified within 3 years and maintain certification.

    (Chronic pain physicians shall be board certified or eligible in Pain Medicine, or equivalent training in this subspecialty .

    Provide clinical services for patients at Children's Hospital and other approved sites in an ethical, professional and timely manner.

    Provide oversight of the medical care team and manage direct patient care for a specified patient population; improve continuity of care, customer service and partnerships with community physicians through timely completion of records and communication.

    Appropriately utilize the defined chain of command and escalation policies.

    communicate clearly to trainees expectations regarding patient updates and notifications of significant clinical changes, and encourages questions from trainees.

    Contribute scholarly effort to the advancement of public policy to promote population-based pediatric health and well being.
    Participate in specific health promotion, education and/or prevention programs.
    Contribute scholarly effort to the advancement of public policy that promotes population-based pediatric health and well being.
    Conduct research of significant scientific value in the clinical and translational science area(s) relevant to his/her practice specialty.
    Publish in peer-reviewed, scientific, quality and management journals.
    Submit applications for grants or contracts for funding of research projects.
    Participate in CNMC's medical education programs through learning activities with colleagues and trainees.
    Participate as appropriate in hospital/university –wide educational programs.
    Participate as appropriate in local, regional and national educational efforts.
    Provide timely feedback to trainees.
    Ensure adequate orientation for the care that the trainees deliver.
    Commitment to Quality & Compliance
    Follow established bylaws, policies and procedures, continuous quality improvement objectives, and safety, environmental, and/or infection control standards.
    Adequately and promptly complete all clinical documentation as required by JCAHO, other regulatory bodies and/or the Medical Staff
    Bylaws, Rules and Regulations and Policies and Procedures include complete clinical charge documentation.
    Cooperate and participate in the development, implementation and revision of policies affecting medical practice, judgment and quality of
    Participate as a member of special care teams, Medical Staff and hospital committees.
    Review and prepare protocol for use by staff. Evaluate patient care according to adopted protocol and Quality Assurance program criteria.

    Participate in evaluation of peers and support staff; acknowledge and report medical and/or other errors as well as participate in efforts to prevent them.

    Core competency in Pediatric Anesthesiology includes the knowledge and skills to provide comprehensive management of newborns, infants, children, and adolescents to be rendered unconscious or insensitive to pain and emotional stress during surgical, dental and medical procedures.

    This includes perioperative examination and evaluation, assessment of the patient's anesthetic risk and impact of any coexisting disease or condition, and developing an appropriate anesthetic management plan pursuant thereto.

    The anesthesiologist also provides consultation to medical and surgical colleagues as well as parents and families in questions related to anesthesia, sedation and management of pain problems.

    Perform general anesthesia, and all other levels of sedation using intravascular, intramuscular, trans-mucosal, inhaled and topically applied agents including major and minor tranquilizers, potent inhaled anesthetic vapors, anesthetic gases, narcotics and non-narcotic analgesics and neuromuscular blocking agents and including invasive monitoring, respiratory therapy including short and long term ventilatory support.

    Perform airway management including mask ventilation, laryngeal mask airway insertion, direct laryngoscopy, fiberoptic bronchoscopy and video laryngoscopy with tracheal intubation.

    Perform local and regional anesthesia with and without sedation, including topical and infiltration, minor and major nerve blocks, intravenous blocks, spinal, epidural.

    Provision of postoperative pain relief with epidural infusion of local anesthetics &/or narcotics.

    Evaluate and manipulate respiratory parameters; fluid, electrolyte, and metabolic parameters including use of blood component therapy; Provide collaborative supervision of Allied Health Professionals (Anesthesia Assistants, Anesthesia RNs and Nurse Practitioners) in the Division of Anesthesiology, Pain and Perioperative Medicine.

    Special Procedures Privileges in

    Cardiac Anesthesiology:

    Anesthetic management of infants, children & adults (with congenital heart lesions) undergoing surgery for corrective and palliative repair of the heart and/or great vessels with or without extracorporeal by-pass.

    Special Procedure Privileges in

    Chronic Pain Medicine:
    Management of complex, chronic pain syndromes, acupuncture, interventional pain procedures.

    Performance Improvement/Problem-solving
    Identify opportunities to improve clinical and administrative processes
    Speak up when team members appear to exhibit unsafe behavior or performance
    Attend carefully to important details - practicing Stop, Think, Act and Review in order to self-check behavior and performance
