    Description

    The Washington Conservation Corps (WCC) within the Department of Ecology is looking to fill a WCC Crew Coordinator (Natural Resource Specialist 5) position.

    This position can be located in any one of the following offices:

    Central Region Office (CRO) in .
    Eastern Region Office (ERO) in .
    Upon hire, you must live within a commutable distance from the duty station.

    In this position, you will work directly with local, state, and federal organizations to plan and manage diverse natural resource projects throughout the state. You will manage the activities of WCC crews located in Snohomish and Northern King Counties. WCC crews consist of five AmeriCorps members and one crew Supervisor. Each of the 5 WCC Crew Coordinators acts as a lead in a priority area. This position takes the lead with risk management for the section and our wildland fire administration efforts. This includes the development of best practices, policies, and training priorities around risk management and coordinating as a liaison with wildland fire management agencies in Washington.

    We are looking for applicants who have demonstrated leadership experience in youth training or workforce development programs. Our ideal candidate will have excellent organizational and communication skills, experience developing policies and procedures, and a background in habitat and environmental restoration.

    Program Mission: The mission of the Shorelands and Environmental Assistance Program is to create community conservation partnerships to protect and restore our shorelands, wetlands, and floodplains. Our Washington Conservation Corps (WCC) is an AmeriCorps program within SEA that creates future leaders through community involvement and mentorship.

    Tele-work options for this position: This position will spend approximately 50% of each workweek in the field. Non-field days are eligible for up to a 90% tele-work schedule.     Duties


    What makes this role unique and challenging?

    In this position, you will work directly with local, state, and federal organizations to plan and manage diverse natural resource projects throughout the state. You will manage the activities of Washington Conservation Corps (WCC) crews who restore critical habitat, build trails, and respond to disasters. WCC crews consist of five AmeriCorps members and one crew Supervisor.

    What you will do:

    This position is a part of the Washington Conservation Corps management team, steering a diverse and dynamic organization as we build the next generation of environmental stewards.
  • Oversee the activities of 10-15 crew supervisors and up to 75 AmeriCorps members year olds and military veterans). You will directly supervise crew supervisors, including hiring new staff, conducting evaluations, reviewing safety at project sites, assessing work standards, providing coaching/mentoring, and ensuring continued AmeriCorps member and staff development. You will also conduct one-on-one and team meetings with Crew Supervisors and AmeriCorps members and mediate interpersonal issues, when necessary.
  • Serve as part of a team that fosters relationships with over 100 environmental service organizations throughout Washington and disaster service organizations nationwide. Work directly with local, state, nonprofit, Tribal and federal organizations to coordinate natural resource projects that are implemented by WCC crews. In addition to protecting and restoring the environment, these projects provide quality service experiences for our AmeriCorps members and staff.
  • Act as a lead in a given area. You will be the lead in risk management and wildland fire administration.
  • Welcome the challenge of adapting to leading a variety of people and projects, making intentional and thoughtful decisions, and guiding continued organizational improvement.
  • Frequent overnight travel is required. Out-of-state travel may be required for disaster response.
  • Working Conditions
    This position involves traveling to project sites and staying overnight throughout Washington state. Emergency response in areas hit by natural disasters throughout United States may entail longer days. You must be willing and able to work flexible hours, hike into wilderness areas and other back country project areas, and at times camp overnight.On Call After Hours Program Responder coverage is expected on a rotation basis and estimated at 4-6 weeks in standby status per year, scheduled in partnership with the incumbent.

    Qualifications

    Required Qualifications:

    Years of required experience indicated below are full-time equivalent years. Full-time equivalent experience means that any experience where working hours were less than 40 hours per week will be prorated in order to meet the equivalency of full-time. We would calculate this by looking at the total hours worked per week, divide this by 40, and then multiply by the total number of months worked. Examples of the proration calculations are:

  • 30 hours worked per week for 20 months: (30/40) x 20 months = 15 months full-time equivalent
  • 20 hours worked per week for 12 months: (20/40) x 12 months = 6 months full-time equivalent
  • Experience for both required and desired qualifications can be gained through various combinations of formal professional employment, educational and volunteer experience. See below for how you may qualify.

    A total of eight (8) years of experience and/or education as described below:

  • Professional level Experience: in a natural resource program area, which includes one year of experience as a senior level natural resource professional.
  • Education: involving a major study in natural resources or a natural resource specialty area, or closely allied field.

    Please note : You experience must includes at least one (1) year of experience as a senior level natural resource professional or higher. This may include one (1) year of experience as an Environmental Specialist 3, Environmental Planner 2, Hydrogeologist 2, Environmental Engineer 2, Environmental Education/Outreach Specialist 3 equivalent, or higher. Experience supervising AmeriCorps members, as a WCC Crew Supervisor 1, or above, is qualifying professional experience.

    Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment:

  • Must possess a valid Driver's License.
  • Must possess, or complete upon hiring, Incident Command System 100 and National Incident Management System 700 certification training.
  • Must not be registered, or required to register, with the National Sex Offender Public Registry.
