Athletic Fields/Bright Nights Coordinator - Springfield, MA

Position Purpose/Summary
Responsible for supervising varied maintenance, construction and repair of athletic fields under the Department of Parks, Buildings and Recreation Management during the months of March through October. Responsible for supervising the set-up and take-down, maintenance, repair and refurbishing of the holiday exhibit known as Bright Nights in Forest Park, October through March. Work is performed with relative independence in accordance with accepted practices and procedures with review through reports, conferences and occasional inspections. Supervision is exercised over assigned crews.
Essential Functions
- Supervises maintenance and improvement of athletic fields and provides services required for athletic functions; i.e. baseball, softball, soccer, football, etc.
- Plans, assigns, supervises and inspects the work of assigned crews engaged in the construction, maintenance, repair and upkeep of athletic fields throughout the City.
- Maintains athletic fields and operates equipment necessary to complete aeration, fertilization, top dressing, mowing, irrigation, lining and related functions.
- Prepares athletic surfaces and associated equipment, i.e. scoreboards, public address systems, for practices, games, tournaments and events during all seasons. Consults with coaches on team requirements.
- Coordinates with contractors, i.e. electricians, irrigation specialists, landscape designers etc., for professional services to Bright Nights event and athletic fields.
- Recommends equipment and material needs, obtains pricing, prepares requisitions and places orders.
- Performs all duties in a safe and professional manner and in accordance with established departmental policies and procedures.
- Supervises athletic field workers and seasonal employees, and recommends staffing needs.
- Supervises the work of assigned crews engaged in constructing and repairing Bright Nights displays in Forest Park.
- Supervises and participates in the set-up and take-down of lighting displays.
- Supervises the inventory, storage and repair to lighting displays.
- Prepares payroll, performance reviews, and disciplinary actions of Bright Nights and athletic field maintenance crews.
- Requisitions, issues materials, supplies and equipment; keeps time and equipment records.
- Performs related work as required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Must have knowledge of grounds and playing turf care and athletic events.
- Ability to plan, assign, supervise and review the work of subordinates.
- Ability to estimate time, materials and equipment requirements for specific projects.
- Good interpersonal skills.
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent experience required, advanced training in turf preparation preferred.
- Three years experience in turf maintenance/management or related field; supervisory experience beneficial.
- Pesticide applicator license or ability to obtain.
- Experience in the construction, maintenance and repair of lighting displays.
