    Description
    Job Title: Surgical Instrument Technician

    General Description:
    Under general supervision, responsible for cleaning, decontamination, assembly, packaging, and sterilization of surgical instrumentation and reusable supply items. Coordinates and prepares necessary supplies and instruments for emergent and routine surgical cases.

    Essential Responsibilities:
    • Assembles and wraps instrument sets.
    • Ensures proper use of sterilized sonic cleaners and other related equipment.
    • Retrieves and delivers surgical instruments on a timely basis.
    • Thoroughly inspects instruments to ensure all instruments are clean and in good repair/working order prior to the sterilization process.
    • Decontaminates instruments using proper chemical mixtures and procedures.
    • Tests, operates, and loads autoclaves.
    • Participates in the routine cleaning and decontamination of all department work surfaces.
    • Completes sterilization log sheets.
    • Periodically checks sterile inventory to remove items with expired sterilization or compromised packaging.
    • Resterilizes compromised instrument sets.
    • Identifies and notifies appropriate personnel of inventory or supply shortages.
    General Responsibilities: Performs other duties as assigned.

    Required Experience: None

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
    • Knowledge of maintenance and sterilization of medical supplies and equipment.
    • Knowledge of applicable sanitation and hygiene standards.
    • Knowledge of proper safety practices of steam and gas plasma sterilization.
    • Knowledge of simple record-keeping principles and practices.
    • Skill in understanding and following verbal and written instructions.
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
    • Effective customer service skills.
    • Able to read, spell, and perform simple math.
    • Strong computer skills.
    • Ability to work effectively under pressure.
    Education:
    Required Education: High School or GED

    Certifications & Licenses: CRCST (Certified Registered Central Service Technician)
