    Position Summary


    The Medical Technologist II Supervisor supervises and coordinates the activities of the subordinate technologists, technicians, aides and assistants performing a variety of tests of highly complex nature.

    In this capacity, s/he assures efficient, accurate and timely reporting of results of tests and examinations.

    They perform routine complex tests which involve delicate and exacting steps requiring measured judgment as to the appropriate procedures to be employed.

    Such testing may be performed by manual methods involving technical interpretation and by automated analyzers involving maintenance and troubleshooting. They may also assist with the instructing of laboratory personnel, and laboratory and medical students.

    They are also responsible for quality control/quality assurance activities in Flow Cytometry, preventative maintenance, implementation/development of testing brought into the Flow Cytometry laboratory, and any other duties assigned by Hematology manager.


    Duties & Responsibilities:

    • Performs highly complex tests by various analyzers in the Laboratory and/or by manual methods on various specimen sources such as blood, bone marrow, and other body fluids, using laboratory established procedures.
    • Assists technologists with technical issues that may occur with the analyzers providing troubleshooting expertise and quality control/assurance guidance.
    • Ensures continuous workflow of the laboratory by working closely with the technologists by communicating verbally and through the Communication Log.
    • Prepares instrument data for review of instrument performance and to assess patient test result validity. Calibrates, performs quality control, and reviews patient data base information.
    • Reviews tests results before reporting, using technical and scientific knowledge to recognize and verify result validity and clinical relevance; consults with Medical Director prior to the release of results when results are unusual or unanticipated.
    • Performs validation studies for new instruments, tests, procedures.
    • Coordinates and participates in R&D and validation projects.
    • Prepares, reviews and updates laboratory procedure manuals.
    • Works cooperatively to prepare for inspections and surveys related to laboratory accreditation requirements.
    • Writes new and updates current procedures as new testing or changes are introduced into the Hematology Laboratory.
    • Prepares and conducts employees' Annual Performance reviews.
    • Responsible for Annual Compliance.
    • Participates in the laboratory Continuing Education (CE) program.
    • Assists in employee recruitment and interview process.
    • Prepares staffing schedules.
    • Conducts periodic staff meetings.
    • Institutes employee discipline and counseling.
    • Conducts activities associated with annual employee's competencies.
    • Coordinates training of personnel, completes training checklists and completes competency evaluation.
    • Completes Shift Report or Problem Analysis Log to thoroughly document any matters requiring follow-up or corrective action.
    • Interacts with physicians, staff, visitors and all customers via telephone conversations and in person, in a pleasant and helpful manner.
    • Performs advanced maintenance and troubleshooting.

    • Reviews and monitors Quality Assurance (QA) reports and takes appropriate actions.
    • Uses the laboratory information systems to perform resulting, specimen look up, and billing functions of patient results through the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
    • Uses information systems down time procedures.
    • Participates in training and validations of new LIS system.
    • Coordinates CAP proficiency testing.
    • Performs established quality procedures such as quality control testing of instrument function, checks, and calibrations.
    Minimum Qualifications


    • High school graduation or equivalent.
    • Meets basic standards and qualifications for laboratory testing for general supervisory personnel under Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA), Subpart M, Section

    Preferred Qualifications


    • Completion of a supervisory training course is highly recommended.
    • Must have knowledge of correct procedures for handling potentially infectious specimen material of patient origin, so as not to contaminate self, coworkers or the work area.
    • Must have knowledge of the importance of appropriate waste handling and disposal.
    • Must understand the applications and purpose of laboratory quality assurance programs and procedures.
    • Must be able to identify personnel problems and have knowledge of the University's Civil Service Policies and Rules for Non-academic Personnel, in executing progressive discipline.
    • Must be able to maintain productive communication with peers, superiors, health care staff and visitors.
    • Must understand the function of the medical laboratories in the health care environment.
    • Must have knowledge of the importance of the flexibility necessary for work performance within the laboratory setting and the importance of a professional appearance and attitude.
    • Work requires a complete understanding of the theoretical applications in all aspects of Hematology.
    • Ability to independently plan and complete work.
