    Biological Resources Facility Veterinarian

    The Biological Resources Facility (BRF) at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science invites applications for a part-time Veterinarian. The individual will work with the Attending Veterinarian and other veterinary and animal care staff to ensure that all animal care and research at the institution is conducted in full compliance with the regulations of the Animal Welfare Act and the USDA, the University's Assurance with the Public Health Service and OLAW and all other relevant agencies.

    Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science is a graduate health sciences university committed to serving the population through the interprofessional education of health and biomedical professionals and the discovery of knowledge dedicated to improving wellness.

    The university's 6 colleges continue Dr Franklin's legacy through rigorous academics, pioneering research, and innovative community service. Our unique interprofessional education model allows students to learn from and with each other in a variety of settings, including simulation labs, the student-led Interprofessional Community Clinic, and through partnerships with area hospitals and clinics.

    We are seeking a veterinarian to provide medical support for all animal species housed at the BRF. Responsibilities include:

    • Providing veterinary medical support for all animal species housed at the BRF
    • Keeping the IO and AV informed regarding animal health and welfare issues in the program via verbal and written reports
    • Sharing emergency coverage with AV and other veterinary staff
    • Providing training and supervision of staff regarding technical procedures, husbandry practices, and appropriate and humane use of animals
    • Performing facility rounds on a routine basis and assisting in medical records reviews
    • Assisting in the development and review of general policies, procedures and SOPs for the BRF
    • Assisting in the design and implementation of the animal welfare and preventative medicine program for all animal species, including sentinel programs
    • Providing guidance to investigators involved in the care and use of animals regarding handling, immobilization, anesthesia, analgesia, surgery, and euthanasia
    • Advising investigators in animal protocol development to ensure proper care for animals while on study
    • Serving as a voting member of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee
    • Participating in facility inspections, including those conducted by the IACUC, USDA, and AAALAC International, and preparing draft documents and reports as requested

    Conditions of employment include:

    • Achieving satisfactory results from a background check
    • Compliance with the current COVID-19 vaccination policy

    Required qualifications include:

    • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine or equivalent from an AVMA-accredited college of veterinary medicine
    • Licensed or licensable to practice veterinary medicine in the state of Illinois
    • Board certification by the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine or equivalent is strongly preferred
    • Experience in a research setting in a laboratory animal veterinarian position, preferably in an AAALAC accredited facility
    • Experience in large and small animal veterinary medicine, surgery, and husbandry
    • Veterinary medicine and surgical experience with swine highly desirable
    • Demonstrated leadership and supervisory experience required

    Desirable qualifications include:

    • Large and small animal veterinary medicine, management and husbandry, and infectious disease
    • Understanding of all federal, state and local regulatory requirements for laboratory animal care and use and AAALAC standards
    • Understanding of biomedical research in animal models
    • Excellent communication, leadership and interpersonal skills
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with department and research personnel
