Assistant Principal of Culture

The purpose of having an Assistant Principal of School Culture is to lead efforts that foster a positive, inclusive, safe, and engaging learning environment for all students and staff. This role focuses less on instruction and more on student behavior, social-emotional learning (SEL), equity, discipline, relationships, and climate-building practices.

The Assistant Principal of Culture reports directly to the Principal and is on the school leadership team.

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Enhance a positive school culture guided by the school's vision, SOAR habits, and beliefs.
  • Implement and monitor school-wide Restorative Practices.
  • Model and support students and staff with mediations and restorative conversations.
  • Supervise the Restorative Practices Coordinator and Recess Coach.
  • Create partnerships with staff, parents, and community to foster positive relationships.
  • Collaborate with mental health staff (School Social Worker, School Counselor, and School Psychologist) with regard to Tier 2 & 3 behavior interventions.
  • Create the metrics and report out on academic, behavior and SEL data throughout the year.
  • Follow the DPS Discipline Matrix for supporting students with behavioral needs.
  • Leads the attendance team by meeting with parents to create partnerships and attendance contracts.
  • Collaborate with the Operations Manager/Health Aide to support the culture and climate of lunch/recess.
  • Routinely visit classrooms to be proactive in supporting the classroom environment with interventions for academics, behavior, and SEL.
  • Implement and monitor school-wide behavioral expectations and policies by addressing safety and welfare of students and staff ( i.e. holding meetings with parents, investigating incidents, documenting findings, contacting proper authorities and conforming to legal requirements and regulations).
  • Coordinate school projects to improve school culture.
  • Collaborate with the Principal, Leadership Team, and the Special Education casemanagers to ensure that behavior interventions are appropriate for all students receiving Special Education services.
  • Ensure that staff, students and families have the structures and resources to foster the environment required for all students to feel engaged in the school community and to reach high levels of engagement and academic success.
  • Facilitate staff professional development on establishing and enforcing positive classroom expectations, developing student-teacher relationships, and building parent/guardian partnerships.
  • Provide coaching, resources, and best practices to support staff to ensure we have a culture of high student achievement and character.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Valid Colorado Principal License preferred (but not required)
  • Linguistically Diverse Education (LDE) certificate preferred (but not required)
  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Spanish bilingual preferred (but not required)
  • 5+ years of successful teaching experience
  • Experience implementing Restorative Practices preferred
  • Past experience leading adults in a school environment
  • Outstanding organizational skills and high attention to detail
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills
  • Asset-Focused and Solution-Based
  • Proactive problem solver who demonstrates initiative and teamwork
  • Strong work ethic coupled with an enthusiastic and passionate approach to one's work with a diverse student population
  • Strong feedback and facilitation skills
  • Articulate a professional demeanor with strong self-confidence and initiative
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to develop productive working relationships across all levels of the school community

Pay: $80, $105,000.00 per year
