Verifies record and identity of patient or donor and converses with patient to allay fear of procedure. Efficiently registers patient. Enters order(s) into computer.

Performs clerical duties such as answering phones, faxing reports, and scanning documents

Performs routine venipunctures while observing principles of asepsis to obtain blood specimens. Collect specimens within one (1) hour of request (STAT orders immediately) and labels blood specimens as soon as specimens are collected.

Prepare outpatient charts for medical records assuring that all tests have been ordered, performed, and finalized.

Prepares paperwork for sample send-outs to reference laboratories and proceses samples.

Enters reference lab orders into system and generates requests.

Processes and packages samples and request for Reference Lab pickup.

Logs entries for sample tracking

Ensure that results have been received from the reference laboratory. Original copies go immediately to the patient chart (in-patients) and copies are faxed to the ordering physician as well as to nursing homes, home health, etc. Scans results into LIS system Follows up with reference lab daily on any outstanding testing.

Prepares sample{s) for testing and streaking of plates in microbiology.

Performs "Waived" testing -Including pre and post analytical phases. Produces accurate and reliable data by following lab methodologies. Adheres to correct procedures and policies and health and safety guidelines. Performs QC at the appropriate intervals to ensure proper test functionality. Documents results accurately into the LIS system.

• Urine Dipstick - (centrifuge specimen for microscopy by Tech).
• Urine HCG, qualitative
• Strep screen
• Rapid Covid testing
• Rapid Flu Testing
• Waived UDS testing
• Any future waived testing that may be brought onboard

Assists Technicians/Technologists in their duties

• Log daily temperatures and humidity – notify Tech if outside range
• Verify water quality daily - notify Tech if outside range
• Stock work stations with pipets, gauze, copy paper, and other supplies needed daily
• Clean work stations
• Change RED BAG trash/ bins
• Clean centrifuges (weekly)
• Change Hematology stain (weekly) and water (daily)
• Print pending list and review for overdue outstanding orders - notify Tech when necessary
• Archive patient data and clean filters on some instrumentation (monthly)
• Assist in training new Lab Assistants and Phlebotomists
• Keep track of supplies and notify Laboratory Designee when supplies are low
• Stock shelves and refrigerators when supplies arrive - ROTATE STOCK
• Mark packing ship/order printout with date of receipt
• Date items with "Received" date

Must be able to demonstrate competency in all procedures within scope of practice, as appropriate to the ages of the patients served; must be able to obtain and interpret information in terms of the patient's needs; must demonstrate a knowledge of growth and development and an understanding of the range of treatments needed by these patients to include infants, pediatrics, adolescents, adults and geriatrics.

Assembles equipment such as tourniquets, needles, disposable containers for needles, blood collection devices, gauze, cotton, and alcohol on work tray according to requirements for specified tests or procedures.

Performs such other tasks as assigned by the Director or Lead Laboratory Technologist.

Maintains monthly continuing education articles and mandatory in-services.

Assures that all tasks performed are following related state and federal guidelines, rules and regulations.

Abides by Yoakum Community Hospital policies and procedures as set forth in the Employee Handbook.

Performance of other duties, as assigned.

Requirements

High school diploma or general education degree (GED), and.

One to three months related experience and/or training; or

Equivalent combination of education and experience.
