    Position Summary

    The Camp Counselor participates in the implementation of Girl Scout programming, ensures safety of the campers, and encourages the success of every camper. Camp Counselors are the primary caregivers for campers during camp. The Camp Counselor is responsible for planning, teaching, coordinating, carrying out activities, and guiding campers in their personal growth.

    Essential Duties & Responsibilities
    • Assist in the direction, supervision, and organization of campers throughout the camp to meet the intended camper outcomes.
      • Apply basic youth development principles in working with campers through communication, relationship development, respect for diversity, involvement, and empowerment of youth.
      • Assure campers are always properly supervised.
      • Be aware of and implement safety guidelines.
    • Participate in the development and implementation of program activities for campers within the mission and outcomes.
      • Responsible for leading and assisting with the teaching of activities.
      • Actively participate in all program areas as assigned.
      • Provide for the progression of activities within the framework of individual and group interests and abilities.
      • Assist in program areas such as archery, rock wall climbing and all camp activities, as directed.
    • Maintain high standards of health and safety in all activities for campers and staff.
      • Provide the daily care of each camper within your supervision including recognition of personal health needs.
      • Ensure that campers receive their medications as directed by the Health and Inclusion Supervisor.
      • Be alert to campers' and staff needs and assist them with personal and/or health problems and discuss with the Health and Inclusion Supervisor and/or Program Specialist when appropriate.
      • Be alert to equipment and facilities to ensure utilization, proper care, and maintenance is adhered to; report repairs needed promptly to the Camp Experience Manager.
    • Be a role model to campers and staff in your attitude and behavior.
      • Follow and uphold all safety and security rules and procedures.
      • Set a good example to campers and others regarding general camp procedures and practices including sanitation, schedule, and sportsmanship.
    • Participate as a member of the camp staff team to deliver evening programs, special events, and other all-camp activities and camp functions.
      • Attend and participate in daily meetings.
      • Provide check in/out support and provide outstanding customer service to families.
    • Other duties as assigned.
    GSGLA El Ranchito Day Camp

    Tucked away in the charming suburbs of Long Beach, El Ranchito is a tree-lined high adventure day camp, where girls are encouraged to take safe risks that boost bravery and promote goal setting. Exciting, confidence-building outdoor activities include archery, low ropes, and a 32-foot climbing tower.

    Council Overview

    Established in Los Angeles in 1922, Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles ("GSGLA"), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, serves 33,000 girls in partnership with nearly 16,000 adult members and volunteers throughout the communities of Los Angeles County, and parts of Kern and San Bernardino Counties.     Qualifications

    Qualifications (Minimum Education and Experience)
    • Must be 18 years of age or be a high school graduate by the start of camp.
    • Must be available for 9.5 weeks of day camp and training dates that will be scheduled before camp.
    • Documented experience teaching or interacting with youth programs
    • Must submit health history form prior to first day of work.
    • Must be committed to work the entire camp season and attend all pre-camp trainings.
    • Must hold a valid CPR/First Aid Certification by the start of camp. Training will be available.

    • Subscribe to the principles of the Girl Scout Movement.
    • Demonstrate a strong work ethic, integrity, and honesty in all professional situations.
    • Must be flexible, adaptable, and willing to thrive in an ever changing/fast-paced environment.
    • Develop and maintain sensitivity to employee diversity in the workplace.
    • Behave in ways that demonstrate respectful treatment of other employees, volunteers, and girls.
    • Practice pluralism and be inclusive with the services provided.
    • Compliance with State-mandated reporter requirements is an essential function of this position.
    • Attend GSGLA signature events and certain other activities/events (including cookie cupboards, etc.) as assigned.
    • Abide by a duty of loyalty to GSGLA and give preference to the business and mission of GSGLA over that of other organizations and your own business interests.
    Physical Requirements
    • The incumbent must have the ability to visually monitor and physically assist campers weighing up to 200 lbs.
    • May lift to 50 lbs. periodically. If more, the incumbent must request assistance.
    • The incumbent must be able to perform this job safely, without endangering the health or safety of him/herself or others.
    • The incumbent must possess endurance including prolonged standing, some bending, stooping, and stretching.
    • The camp operates with daily exposure to various weather conditions and animals such as bugs, raccoons, and other wilderness animals common to the area.
