    Description

    Job Title:
    Characterization & Failure Analysis Scientist/Engineer

    Industry Background:
Energy storage systems is a rapidly emerging field.

Over the last few years, supply-chain constraints and significant safety incidents arising from lithium-ion batteries globally have resulted in a dramatic increase in costs and reduced confidence in the reliability of the technology.

Alsym is working on an exciting proprietary aqueous battery technology that is expected to compete with state-of-the-art lithium-ion batteries while offering the technology at a fraction of the cost and with inherent non-flammability.

    Key Qualifications:
B.S. or M.S. in chemistry, materials science, or related discipline
    2+ years industry experience
Recently graduated B.S. and M.S. scientists/engineers will be considered if extensive hands-on experience with instrumentation during academic research.

Strong candidates will have broad knowledge of various materials characterization and chemical analysis techniques and proven record of method development.

Hands on experience with FE-SEM-EDS, XRD, XRF, BET SA, STA (TGA/DSC), UV-Vis, wet chemical analysis (pH, conductivity, titrimetry).
Experience with image data analysis software such as Avizo or Dragonfly is a plus.
Experience with statistical analysis such as Minitab, JMP or other software is a plus.
Deep know-how in e-chem techniques for battery diagnostics is a plus.
Understanding of electrochemistry, specifically on aqueous batteries and related material and electrode characterization is preferred.

    Roles & Responsibilities:

Develop analytical methods for the characterization of pouch cell and battery materials including raw materials, anode, cathode, electrolyte, current collector, and separator.

Assemble, test and complete post-mortem analysis of pouch cells in collaboration with test engineers to determine root-cause of cell performance and failure.

Perform critical interpretation of analytical and cell data; analyze information to drive mechanistic understanding of battery components related to performance.

Communicate technical findings and propose corrective actions.
Lead the install and commission of new analytical instruments.
Perform routine maintenance and calibration of analytical instruments and equipment.
Coordinate and/or perform experiments with external laboratories for advanced characterization.
