    Job Description:

    The counselor collaborates with staff, administrators, students, community resources and parents to promote student success in the areas of academic, career, and personal/social development (American School Counseling Association-ASCA Standards).

    Under the supervision of a site administrator, the counselor is responsible for counseling students individually and in groups.

    Provide support to 9-12 grade students and families in the personal-social, academic, and college and career domains according to ASCA National Standards.

    The counselor will work to expand each student's opportunities to develop his/her potential; advise students on course selection and planning; Monitor graduation progress, provide and conduct educational workshops; support student assemblies and parent evening meetings; provide information and guidance pertaining to post-secondary plans; including programs such as AVID and Link Crew.


    Major Duties & Responsibilities:
    Provide information and support to students and parents in the three counseling domains according to ASCA National Standards. Work with various agencies (DCFS, local therapists) to provide services to students and families. Support and refer students to programs such as, AVID, Peer Tutoring, academic intervention, and other student groups. Work collaboratively with site administration to create, design and modify the Master Schedule. Supervise interns. Attend Section 504 and IEP meetings, conduct SST's, and serve on various campus wide committees. Monitor student progress within the areas of academics, attendance and discipline. Facilitate conferences with students, parents, community resources and teachers when necessary. Provide crisis counseling when necessary. Have an understanding of mandated reporter laws and procedures and assist other staff in reporting when appropriate. Maintain accurate records of student, parent and staff contacts. Advise students in the development of their individual academic program and plan. Communicate with parents and all stakeholders. Evaluate transcripts for graduation. Assist students with transitions middle to high school. Generate letters of recommendation.

    Interpret, provide information regarding and assist in the administration of tests such as Advanced Placement Exams, aptitude and interest tests.

    Attend Back to School, Graduation and grade level appropriate meetings. Serve on district and school site committees.

    High School Counselors assist students with the formulation of post-secondary plans such as university, college, vocational school, military options, and the work force.

    High School Counselors provide students with information on entrance exams, California High School Proficiency Exam (CHSPE), Career choice options, course requirements, CTE, elective choices, financial aid, scholarships and other alternatives.

    Create plans with students and families for those off track for graduation.
