INTRODUCTION

Under the direct supervision of the Medical Director, the Lead Provider Intake Medical for Correctional Care oversees and coordinates the medical intake process for individuals entering the correctional care system. This role ensures that all medical evaluations, screenings, and assessments are performed efficiently, accurately, and in compliance with applicable policies, procedures and regulations of Unity Health Care and DC department of Corrections. The Lead Provider collaborates with multidisciplinary teams including SUD (substance use disorder), chronic care, sick call and mental health departments in order to provide quality care and support for incarcerated individuals while maintaining safety and security standards.

MAJOR DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Provide direct patient care, including diagnosis and treatment of mental health conditions and substance use disorder.
  • Provide direct patient care, including diagnosis and treatment of primary health care conditions.
  • Lead a team of healthcare professionals, providing guidance and fill in vacancies as needed
  • Collaborate with other healthcare providers to develop and implement treatment plans
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records
  • Stay current with developments in the field of Psychiatry, Addiction Medicine and Primary care to incorporate new knowledge into patient care

Leadership and Coordination:

  • Supervise and educate intake medical staff, including nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, medical assistants, and support personnel.
  • Assign and monitor daily tasks to ensure seamless medical intake operations.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for intake-related medical inquiries and issues.

Medical Intake Process:

  • Conduct or oversee initial health screenings, including physical exams, mental health evaluations, and chronic disease assessments.
  • Ensuring that medical providers are adequately bridging medications for individuals on MAT regimens, psychoactive medications and medications for chronic medical conditions
  • Review and document patients' medical histories, allergies, and current medications.
  • Identify urgent or emergent medical needs and ensure immediate care is provided.
  • Coordinate with pharmacy staff to ensure continuity of care for prescribed medications.

Compliance and Documentation:

  • Ensure that all medical assessments and documentation comply with federal, state, and facility-specific guidelines.
  • Conduct regular audits to ensure adherence to quality and compliance standards.

Collaboration and Communication:

  • Work closely with correctional staff, mental health professionals, and external healthcare providers to address patient needs.
  • Implement the routine use of the CRISP application by all intake medical providers to ascertain up to date medical records on each individual screened
  • Provide training and guidance to intake medical staff on protocols and procedures.
  • Serve as a liaison between the correctional facility and intake medical staff

Safety and Security:

  • Follow all safety protocols and ensure staff compliance with security measures within the correctional facility.
  • Monitor for signs of infectious disease or other public health concerns during intake.

Quality Improvement:

  • Analyze trends in intake data to identify areas for process improvement.
  • Implement evidence-based practices to enhance the efficiency and quality of care provided.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master's degree.
  • Advanced Practice Certification (NP/PA preferred)
  • Licensure: Current and valid license for Washington DC.

EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in correctional healthcare, emergency medicine, or primary care.
  • Prior experience working in the intake, chronic care and sick call departments at Unity Health Care/DC DOC
  • Prior leadership or supervisory experience preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Experienced in Psychiatry, Addiction Medicine and Primary care to diagnose and treat patients with health conditions.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with other healthcare providers and lead a team of healthcare professionals.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team will be essential in providing comprehensive patient care.
  • Experience in a leadership or supervisory role, as well as working in a fast-paced healthcare environment with diverse patient populations.
  • Strong clinical assessment and diagnostic skills.
  • Proficient in electronic medical records, Centricity EMR systems and CRISP.
  • Excellent communication and organizational abilities.
  • Knowledge of correctional care regulations, including NCCHC and ACA standards.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The position reports to the Medical Director at DOC.

GUIDELINES

The position abides by all rules and regulations set forth by applicable licensing and regulatory bodies, as well as UHC policies and procedures.

PERSONAL CONTACTS

The position requires contact with staff at all levels throughout the organization. There are also external organization relationships that may be a part of the work of this individual. Direct interactions with inmate population and correctional officers.

PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

Some walking, standing, bending and carrying of light items such as books and paper is required.

The incumbent must be able to balance the needs of diverse constituencies on a daily basis.

RISKS

The position's work involves everyday risk and discomforts, which require normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices, meetings, training rooms, and other UHC sites. The work area is adequately lit, heated, and ventilated. All medical services shall be provided according to medically accepted community standards of care.
