    Laboratory Equipment Technician - Austin, United States - Texas Department of Aging & Disability Services

    Job Description:



    Performs complex mechanical and electronic repair and preventative maintenance of laboratory equipment. Calibrates and repairs electronic components to the board level and coordinates calls for service technicians as needed. Coordinates and/or performs emergency repairs on laboratory equipment. Coordinates and schedule service and/or repairs of digital certified thermometers, weight(s) and weight sets.

    Manages service agreement contracts for annual service and/or preventative maintenance of specific instruments up to large group types of instruments and equipment.

    Ensures that preventive maintenance is performed as scheduled and that service and maintenance records are up to date. Purchases miscellaneous parts and supplies as required for repairs and maintains inventory of frequently needed items. Ability to communicate effectively in writing. Maintains positive working relationships with laboratory staff and service technicians.

    Works under the limited supervision of the Lab Building Operations Branch Manager with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.


    Essential Job Functions:
    EJF 1.

    Performs preventive maintenance service on laboratory equipment monthly; verifies and conducts inspections, tests, and reviews of equipment and instruments for quality control and preventive maintenance programs.

    Schedules monthly preventive maintenance service by the second workday of each month setting priorities and schedules according to actual workload, so that completion of any item does not exceed its scheduled date by more than 30 days.

    Provides (records) details of service performed by inventory number including time spent, and costs incurred for entry into the CMMS.

    Periodically reviews records on each instrument in CMMS and makes recommendation for replacement when repairs have exceeded 50% of original cost.

    Initiates proper paperwork for transfer or disposition of old or obsolete items and provides follow-up to insure action within reasonable time frames.

    Maintains files of equipment operating and service manuals, parts lists, and supply vendors in an organized fashion, so that all items are easily located.

    Maintains spare parts inventory and makes changes in reorder quantities, low limits, and ordering specifications as necessary. Maintains positive working relationships with laboratory staff and service technicians. Communicates effectively verbally and in writing. (25%)
    EJF 2. Calibrates and repairs electronic components to the board level, and coordinates service from vendors as needed. Performs routine repairs, calibrations, and adjustments to laboratory instruments and equipment. Logs and reviews requests for service same day as received, establishes service priority, and schedules time frame for service.

    Performs required service, so that completion occurs within three workdays of established schedule, informing supervisor whenever time frame cannot be met.

    Follows HHSC and Laboratory policies and procedures for purchasing requests. (20%)
    EJF 3. Coordinates and/or performs emergency repairs on laboratory equipment.

    Responds to emergency requests within one hour of notification, determines the urgency of the needed repairs, and performs or schedules service accordingly.

    Ensures follow-up request for service is received and processed. Logs and reviews requests for outside service within the laboratory. Maintains positive working relationships with laboratory staff and service technicians. Communicates effectively verbally and in writing. (20%) EJF 4.

    Manages service agreement contracts for annual service and/or preventative maintenance of specific instruments up to large group types of instruments and equipment.

    Makes necessary vendor or General Services contracts; writes statement of work, request quotes from vendors and submits requisitions for annual service agreements.

    Manage, document service records and reports, maintain documentation on vendor's accreditation, and resolves any invoice, credits and/or billing issues with Lab Accounting and Accounts Payable Department.

    EJF 5. Coordinates and schedule service and/or repairs of digital certified thermometers, weight(s) and weight sets.

    Coordinate, schedule and manage the annual certifications of all digital thermometers, weights and weight sets that are used throughout the laboratory ensuring proper Class type of certifications of each unit and ensure adequate vendor's accreditation so that the certifications meet the needs of each laboratory section.

    Document entries into CMMS and maintain records of vendor's certifications and accreditation up to N.I.S.

    Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency's obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or continuity of operations (COOP) activation.

    Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location. (5%)

    Knowledge Skills Abilities:

    Knowledge of basic functions of commonly used laboratory equipment (familiarity) and hazards of working in a laboratory environment (thorough awareness).

    Knowledge of computers including Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, Power Point & Visio software along with Adobe Acrobat and Computer Maintenance Management System (CMMS).

    Knowledge of safety procedures and potential hazards, of servicing procedures and repair
    techniques, and of various types of equipment and their related applications.

    Skill in the use of electronic instruments to trouble shoot and/or repair solid state circuitry to the board level (advanced).

    Skill in computers including Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, Power Point & Visio software along with Computer Maintenance Management System (CMMS).

    Skill in the use of tools and in the assembly, operation, and repair of various machines and systems.
    Skill in the safe use of a wide variety of shop equipment used for electronic and mechanical repairs.
    Skill in prioritizing assignments.

    Ability to understand and follow instructions of a technical nature, to analyze equipment and resolve problems, to communicate effectively, and to serve as a lead worker providing guidance to others.

    Ability to analyze equipment, malfunctions and resolve problems.
    Ability to organize and maintain records.
    Ability to maintain positive working relationship.
    Ability and willingness to take initiative.
    Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

    Ability to interact diplomatically with internal customers, purchasing, vendors and service representatives in the repair, and maintenance of medical and/or laboratory testing equipment.

    Ability to work independently and make technical decisions based on professional knowledge and experience.
