Job Summary
Teachers will join an NSF-funded project focused on the genomics of urban evolution in house mice. STEM teachers will work closely with the Phifer-Rixey Lab and participate in field and/or laboratory research during a 7-week summer program (June through August In addition to gaining experience in an active research lab, teacher participants will contribute to developing teaching materials related to the research for use in K-12 classrooms. This position is based at Drexel University with opportunities for fieldwork in and around the city.
Participants will be provided with a $6,000 stipend. In addition, participants will be able to order up to $1,000 in supplies to continue research in the classroom and up to $1000 in conference travel reimbursement for related professional development.
Essential Functions:
- Conduct field and laboratory activities relating to evolutionary genetics including, but not limited to, sampling, collecting trait data, and extracting nucleic acids from samples.
- Conduct data analysis.
- Develop of teaching materials.
- Curate of data and documentation of all research activities and analysis.
- Maintain laboratory and field supplies.
- Assist with outreach and education activities.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- Minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in Biology or a closely related field
- At least 1 completed year as a middle or high school science teacher.
- Current teaching certification.
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
- Significant teaching responsibility in the life sciences.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Primary teaching responsibility in the life sciences, including biology, environmental science, or closely related fields.
