    Departmental Overview

    The Space Sciences Laboratory is an Organized Research Unit of the University of California at Berkeley. Its function is to build equipment and conduct research in all aspects of space science, including ground based equipment, earth orbit and interplanetary probes and instruments. The mechanical shop exists to assist in all aspects of this equipment prototyping, design and production using a variety of common and exotic materials. Principal Laboratory Mechanicians perform the most demanding of this work.

    Responsibilities

    • Advanced knowledge of mechanical fabrication using all types of machine tools, plus cold and hot forming processes. Fabrication of thin-walled, lightweight parts.
    • Skilled machinist, using precision metal working machine tools including milling machines, lathes, presses, breaks and shears to very high tolerances. CNC experience a plus, but not required.
    • Experience in machining of exotic materials: carbon fiber, titanium, etc.
    • Interact with clients to understand job requirements.
    • Analyze jobs for ease of manufacture, problems, and materials
    • Design and build tools, jigs, dies and fixtures needed for fabrication of complex and/or thin-walled parts.
    • Sheet metal fabrication of covers and precision electrical leads.
    • Weld parts, as required, to produce leak tight, high vacuum feedthroughs and fittings for flight hardware or test chambers using various methods or techniques, as required.
    • Fit and assemble parts into finished products, finish machine assemblies and test, as required.
    • Maintain machine tools

    Required Qualifications

    • Ability to interact with scientists, researchers, engineers, and students using rough sketches and concepts or finished blueprints to understand client's needs. Independently review work for feasibility and initiate corrective action as required.
    • Ability to read and interpret correctly engineering drawings or blueprints to ANSI standards.
    • Ability to use precision machine and hand tools to make parts to close tolerances; tools include mills, lathes, saws, presses, brakes and shears.
    • Tool making experience for unique applications and specifically for thin, lightweight components.
    • CNC machining preferred, but not required.
    • Proficiency in high-vacuum soldering and welding. Hard and soft soldering.
    • Ability to assemble complex equipment. Knowledge of machining exotic materials.

    Education / Training Requirements

    • Graduation from High School and ten years of experience in multi-disciplinary fabrication or job shop, instrument making and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Ability to set up and run complex parts on CNC mills and lathes.
    • Ability to use CAD/CAM system such as SolidWorks and GibbsCam.

    Preferred Education / Training Requirements

    • Completion of an approved apprenticeship or community college program in Machine Tool Technology.

    Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

    The budgeted hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $52.18-$55.84.

    • This is a full-time (40 hours/week), career position, and eligible for full UC benefits.
    • The annual salary is commensurate with experience within the budgeted range.
