    Job Title HVAC Technician I Position Number Department Facilities Management Salary $38,500 Job Summary/Description


    Under general supervision, performs skilled mechanical work related to the operation, maintenance, and repair of the University's HVAC and Central Plant equipment.

    HVAC Technician I works under the guidance of the Lead HVAC/Controls Technician in corrective and preventative maintenance of HVAC and Central Plant equipment.

    Typical Duties/Job Duties


    • Lubricates and cleans mechanical parts.
    • Changes air filters on equipment.
    • Meets daily with mechanical staff to discuss plans, schedules, deadlines and other issues.
    • Participates in repair and maintenance of HVAC, refrigeration and related mechanical equipment with difficult or special problems.
    • Performs water test, analyzes and treats hot, chilled and condenser water systems. Maintains equipment logs.
    • Keeps Lead HVAC/Controls Technician informed of equipment status.
    • Communicates with Facilities Management personnel, faculty, staff and contractors.
    • Attends trainings, seminars, and other meetings as needed.
    • Cleans and maintains work areas, university vehicles and mechanical rooms.
    • Performs after hour, holiday and weekend repairs on a rotating on call schedule and as needed in the event of emergencies.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.
    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities


    • Knowledge of the principles and practices of HVAC systems maintenance, including related electrical and pneumatic controls.
    • Basic knowledge of math, algebra and geometry.
    • Good communication skills, both written and verbal.
    • Ability to gain knowledge of university policies and procedures.
    • Knowledge of environmental requirements related to building maintenance.
    • Demonstrate initiative and perform quality work in a busy, multi-task environment.
    • Basic knowledge of chemistry and physics as related to plant issues.
    • Ability to operate computer keyboard.
    • Ability to troubleshoot equipment to component level.
    • Ability to read and understand complex manuals and diagrams.
    • Must be able to adjust to changing priorities.
    • Ability to operate maintenance vehicles, industrial hand and power tools, welder, personnel lifts, fork lift, computers, sheet metal fabrication, equipment, software, fax, copier, and calculators.
    Minimum Qualifications


    • High school diploma or GED certification required.
    • 5 years HVAC experience Technician type I or higher.
    • Refrigeration EPA approved certification is required.
    • Must have a valid Texas driver's license and have a driving record acceptable to the University's insurance company.
    Preferred Qualifications


    • Technical school training in HVAC or related systems preferred.
    Physical Requirements


    • Position requires frequent walking, standing , reaching, climbing, and bending.
    • Periodic carrying, kneeling, pushing and pulling.
    • Required to lift up to 80lbs.
    • Visual and hearing acuity as well as normal color vision are required.
    • Basic manual dexterity with both hands is required and both feet are utilized in the operation of equipment and/or vehicles.
    • Ability to power grip tools is also necessary.
    • Position requires working indoors and outdoors.
    • Occasional exposure to inclement weather conditions.
