    UofL Health is investing in the health of Bullitt County, and the surrounding area with an expansion of UofL Health – Medical Center South to become an inpatient hospital – UofL Health – South Hospital. South Hospital is expected to open in early 2024 and will add approximately 100,000 square feet of new space to the existing facility. South Hospital will include a 10-bed intensive care unit, medical/surgical patient rooms, six operating rooms, new cardiac catheterization lab, expanded emergency department, centralized sterile processing area, laboratory, pharmacy, cardiopulmonary, respiratory therapy and more.

    Responsibilities


    Job Summary:

    The Infection Preventionist, RN (IP) is part of a team responsible for the implementation of the infection prevention program and will perform ongoing surveillance and epidemiologic review of patients, employees, and the environment.

    The IP uses epidemiological principles and methods for identification and prevention of infectious diseases to patients and healthcare workers. The employee uses surveillance to identify areas of risk and develops evidence-based strategies to prevent the development of hospital acquired infections. The employee guides, studies, and serves as a resource on all aspects of hospital functions related to prevention and control of infections for all patient populations.

    The IP works collaboratively to coordinate data collection and analysis and assists in the overall risk assessment of the inpatient and outpatient populations. The IP also provides support in implementation of guidelines, policies and initiatives. The IP adheres to reporting standards as set forth by Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and other regulatory bodies and enters this information into the National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) system. The employee works with local and state health departments to identify trends in reportable diseases and reports such diseases as required by 902 KAR 2020.

    Job Responsibilities:

    Infection Prevention & Control: Administrative Oversight

    • Assists with development, implementation, and evaluation of the Infection Prevention program
    • Assists with development and implementation of the infection control risk assessment and goals
    • Provides suggestions for revising the surveillance program based on the facility risk assessment and national practice standards
    • Ensures Infection Prevention program compliance with local, state and federal guidelines.
    • Accepts delegated authority to monitor and resolve issues related to infection prevention
    • Applies infection prevention-related measures to ensure full compliance with regulatory & accrediting standards
    • Coordinates the planning and implementation of infection control risk assessment related to facility projects, construction, and other activities
    • Participates in and promotes antimicrobial stewardship to encourage optimal antimicrobial use

    Surveillance, Monitoring and Performance Improvement:

    • Performs surveillance for evidence of healthcare acquired infections (HAIs)
    • Reviews laboratory results and demonstrates ability to determine infection prevention and control implications
    • Assists with the coordination of outbreak investigations, communicable disease exposures and potential transmission
    • Identify the need for special epidemiologic studies, as well as setting standards, evaluating compliance and ensuring follow up
    • Participates in environment of care rounding
    • Provides analysis and dissemination of infection prevention and control data
    • Ensures data reliability and validity and monitors for variations
    • Coordinate infection prevention & control improvement efforts with leaders across facilities
    • Provides epidemiological support in trending/tracking organisms and/or infections
    • Utilizes information systems as part of infection prevention and control data management

    Consultation, Education & Support:

    • Collaborates with facility and department leaders to implement best practices
    • Serves as Infection Prevention liaison to employee health (EH) for EH and safety education, evaluation of exposures, preventive measures, and risk assessment
    • Collaborates with other infection preventionists
    • Promotes involvement in local, state, and/or national forums
    • Reviews and evaluates products for healthcare use
    • Serves as infection prevention subject matter expert to plant facilities/engineering and contractors on indoor air quality, construction, and new facility development
    • Serves as infection prevention subject matter expert in the development of infection prevention and control educational topics
    • Supports infection prevention and control operations throughout the organization
    • Collaborates with facility departments in reviewing policies, procedures, and processes related to infection prevention and control

    Shift Requirements:

    Must be available to work off shifts, flexible dates and flexible start/end time

    Qualifications


    Required Qualifications:

    • Associate degree in Nursing
    • 3 years of experience in nursing, microbiology, or public health epidemiology
    • Active Kentucky Registered Nurse License or compact license with privileges to work in Kentucky
    • Certification in Infection Control and Epidemiology (CIC) (required within 3 years of hire)
    • Basic Life Saving (BLS) accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA)

    Preferred Qualifications:

      • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
      • Acute care experience
