    VideosDutiesThe housekeeping aids who maintain VA facilities for Veterans and their families are essential to the patient care experience at the U.S.

    Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

    A VA healthcare career as a housekeeping aide means working alongside other Veterans, who make up 85 percent of the housekeeping staff.

    As a Housekeeping Aid, you will perform a full range of light and heavy cleaning duties and routine housekeeping duties.

    Veterans rely on the skills of these professionals to keep patient areas clean and safe by addressing spills quickly, discarding trash, installing light bulbs in halls and rooms, and vacuuming and polishing floors.

    The following description covers the duties of an employee assigned in the category of a WL-2 Housekeeping Aid Leader.

    The employee may do several or all of the following duties in any area of the medical center to meet aseptic cleaning standards.

    Incumbent is required to carry a pager or companion phone for use inside the medical center. Incumbent will ensure that Housekeeping Aids perform workload as assigned by supervisor.

    Assignment checklist with cleaning steps will be completed and inspections will be reviewed with supervisor for accuracy and remediation action plan.

    Incumbent functions as a working leader on the day, evening, or night shift and works weekends with two days off during the week and is responsible for setting the pace and leading the Housekeeping Aids, WG either in special or routine cleaning assignments throughout the medical center or overall housekeeping operations.

    Passes on information and instructions from supervisors to other employees, works with other employees to give on-the-job training, demonstrates proper work methods, assures adequate equipment and supplies needed for assignments are obtained and available for use.

    Reports to supervisor on status and progress of work, assures that safety rules and housekeeping procedures are followed, advises assigned employees to follow instructions from supervisors and meets work deadlines.

    Incumbent provides direction to assigned workers on procedures, policies, and other VA directives.

    Cleans floors, walls, baseboards, windows, ceilings, furniture, vacant beds, carpet, upholstery, sinks, commodes, mirrors, glass, and vents in all areas of the medical center.

    Strips, scrubs, and refinishes floors, removes soiled linen, stocks clean linen rooms, and collects and removes trash. Moves furniture, sets up conference rooms, auditoriums, and other special events. Hangs and removes shades, draperies, and cubicle curtains. Incumbent will perform workload as assigned by supervisor.

    Assignment checklist with cleaning steps will be completed and inspections will be reviewed with supervisor for accuracy and remediation action plan.

    Incumbent will perform bed bug inspections and steam treat patient care areas reported and confirmed of having bed bugs utilizing a commercial vapor steam cleaner.

    Duties include cleaning wards, patient rooms, storerooms, offices, corridors, restrooms, shower rooms, and other areas.

    Housekeeping Aids sweep, mop, scrub (machine) floors, vacuum carpets and upholstered furniture, empty waste baskets, clean light globes and Venetian blinds, wash walls, windows and ceilings by climbing small ladders, refill toilet tissue and towel dispensers and move furniture.

    Housekeeping Aids carry out assignments with minimal supervision.

    PHYSICAL EFFORT:
    The position demands continuous walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, pulling, and pushing.

    The work requires the occasional use of heavy powered cleaning equipment (e.g., wall washers, industrial type buffers) weighing over 50 pounds.

    The duties necessitate considerable dexterity, hand, foot, and eye coordination, and concentration as well as visual acuity to see dirt, dust and debris.


    WORKING CONDITIONS:
    Work is normally performed indoors with adequate heat, light, and ventilation.

    Some work may be performed outdoors where there may be exposed to varying degrees of heat and cold as well as inclement weather.

    PPE may be required in some circumstance as exposure to possible contagious diseases, blood and bloody secretion are inherent to this position.

    Care is required to avoid serious injuries (i.e., broken bones) when working on ladders, or when using pound power equipment or handling hazardous materials.

    Candidates may be eligible for a lump sum CSI for a pro-rated amount if onboard prior to the CSI expiration date.
