    Position Summary

    As a Manager, Controls Engineering you will be responsible to help lead the company's product development and evolution of an industry leading Solar + Storage controls system.

    Leveraging your 7 + years of controls system development experience in the energy industry you will help guide IHI Terrasun through a complete software development lifecycle from requirements to delivery and operation.

    You will be on the forefront to deliver a control system that exceeds customer expectations for system reliability, performance, safety and profitability.

    Primary Job Functions

    Manager, Controls Engineering


    Participate in the design, implementation and testing of PLC based controls system for commercial and utility scale solar + storage control applications in simulated and real-world scenarios.

    Contribute to complex control design to optimize implementation.

    Interface with 3rd party developers and Terrasun engineers to develop and design verification test methods.


    Demonstrated history of delivering quality products to market with understanding and respect for all phases of the product development process, especially requirements and specification development and release control.

    Strong management skills

    Vendor oversite – technical oversite of vendors for hardware needed for the PLC controls system.

    Participate in product planning and roadmap development.

    Understand relevant safety and compliance requirements and ensure adherence.


    Support Sales proposal development through design of site system single line diagrams, communications network diagrams, and reviews of overall system electrical design.

    Plan, execute and deliver multiple engineering projects concurrently, ensuring adherence to project timelines, budgets, and quality standards.


    Support the development of processes to better facilitate the execution of Controls Engineering team activities and handoffs between stakeholders, including Product Management, Systems Engineering, Edge Services, Infrastructure and Security Engineering and Design & Engineering.

    Develop and maintain program plans and schedules.

    Identify and manage risks and issues throughout the program and project lifecycle, and develop mitigation plans to address them.

    Facilitate communication and collaboration between cross-functional teams, including engineering, sales, product, and quality assurance teams.

    Provide mentorship and coaching to team members, and develop their skills and capabilities.

    Job Dimensions (Skills, Knowledge & Abilities)

    Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Industrial, or Systems Engineering, Computer Science, Process Controls, Engineering Technology, or combination of education and relevant experience

    15+ years' experience as a PLC controls engineer.

    Experience on PLC Based Controls Systems is required

    Experience on AllenBradley ControlLogix and CompactLogix

    Experience on the GE Rx3i PLC is preferred.

    Experience on the SEL 3505 PLC or similar SEL is preferred.

    7 + years Power System Controls

    Solar experience is a must. Solar + Storage preferred.

    NERC CIP compliance understanding is required.

    Cybersecurity system design experience is required.

    Practical electrical engineering or power system experience.

    Fundamentals of power and power transmission systems required.

    Knowledge of inverter principles is preferred.

    Ability to work as a key member on a development team.

    Ability to interface well with internal & external customers and 3rd party vendors.

    Background with substation communication equipment and industrial protocols (MODBUS, DNP, ICCP, and OPC) is required

    Design tools such as AutoCAD, Visio, etc. is a required

    Qualifications (Education & Work Experience)

    Agile, able to handle rapidly changing requirements.

    Excellent communication skills (verbal/written)

    Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and Windows system administration

    Ability to be self-motivated and perform duties in a collaborative working environment.

    Proven track record of successfully managing complex engineering projects, from conception to delivery.

    Strong project management or program management skills, with the ability to develop and maintain project plans, schedules, and budgets.

    Experience in managing cross-functional teams and external partners.

    Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills.

    Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

    Knowledge of relevant industry standards and regulatory requirements.

    Familiarity with Agile and Waterfall methodologies.

    Familiarity with Jira and Smartsheets is a plus.

    Experience in the power industry is a plus.

    Certificates/Licenses

    PE License (preferred)

    PMP or PgMP (preferred)

    The national pay range for this role is $139,900 - $184,300 / year and is considered a Level S3 – Senior Support Individual Contributor role.

    This pay range may be slightly lower or higher based on the geographic location of the hired employee.

    The actual pay offered may vary based upon, but not limited to:
    education, skills, experience, proficiency, performance, and location. In addition to base salary, the total compensation package may also include participation in an annual discretionary bonus.
