If so, we want to hear from you Sterling Engineering is seeking a highly motivated and results-oriented Principal Mechanical Engineer to join our growing team. In this leadership role, you will play a pivotal role in overseeing and executing various engineering projects, including facilities design, equipment selection, large capital expenditure (CAPEX) projects, laboratory renovations, and construction-related tasks. Responsibilities:
    • Provide technical leadership and expertise and compliance for all mechanical engineering aspects of assigned projects to include Facilities, Equipment, Large projects, Laboratory renovations, construction related work, design reviews and checking external architecture designs.
    • Ensure quality and results that function through sound design, early identification and mitigation of risks, implementation of fallback strategies.
    • Manage the design process for facilities, equipment selection, and CAPEX projects, ensuring adherence to budget, schedule, and quality standards.
    • Lead and mentor a team of mechanical engineers, providing guidance and support for their professional development.
    • Maintain project controls and reporting for cost, scope, and schedule. Develop execution strategy including procurement.
    • Analyze business forces (customer, suppliers, competitors, technologies, government regulations) to identify trends and recommend response.
    • Conduct thorough reviews of internal and external design submittals, including those from architectural firms, ensuring adherence to codes, standards, and project specifications.
    • Provide final approval and stamping on mechanical designs.
    • Collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, including project managers, architects, contractors, and internal stakeholders.
    • Identify and implement strategies for cost optimization and risk mitigation throughout the project lifecycle.
    • Maintain a strong understanding of relevant building codes and safety regulations (e.g., IBC, ASME, NFPA).
    Qualifications:
    • Bachelor of Engineering, Science, or a related discipline
    • Professional Engineer (P.E.) license in the state of Illinois (mandatory).
    • Minimum 10+ years of experience in a relevant engineering field, with a strong focus on mechanical engineering for facilities, equipment, and construction projects.
    • Proven experience in leading and managing complex engineering projects from concept to completion.
    • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
    • Strong communication, interpersonal, and collaboration skills.
    • Proficient in mechanical engineering design software (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks).
    • Familiarity with building codes and safety regulations a plus.
