    The Ethnic-Racial Socialization (ERS) and Mental Health Lab uses a strengths-focused and community-based lens to: 1) Examine contextual nuance in the process and benefits of ERS in the context of racial stress and trauma within Black families, 2) Explore how ERS occurs and can be improved within schools, and 3) Translate research to inform and develop interventions and applied tools to promote mental health. One current project is the implementation and evaluation of TRANSFORM. TRANSFORM is a holistic and culturally responsive group-based intervention designed to disrupt the psychological impact of racism and promote the well-being of adolescent of color.

    Note: This is a 1-year fixed term position that may be renewed subject to funding and operational need. This position is based on Stanford's main campus and will be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement (partly in-person, partly remote)

    Dr. Farzana Saleem's Ethnic-Racial Socialization (ERS) and Mental Health Lab is seeking a research manager at 75% FTE beginning July 2024 to: 1-Serve as the program coordinator for the TRANSFORM intervention and 2-Support operations of the research program of the ERS and Mental Health Lab. The staff member will work under the supervision of the PI.

    Your primary responsibilities will include:

    • Building and maintaining community research partnerships
    • Overseeing and supporting the implementation of a youth focused group based intervention, TRANSFORM
    • Participate in the development and administration of survey instruments and rating scales requiring judgment in applying non-routine procedures. Analyze and summarize results for review with supervisor. Audit the accuracy and validity of data
    • Review and audit case report forms for completion and accuracy with source documents, and ensure compliance with research protocols.
    • Identify, select, extract and summarize data and structured information. Present summary of findings to supervisor.
    • Conduct literature searches, and write literature summaries and manuscripts, requiring preliminary judgments after the supervisor outlines conceptual approach.
    • Build and organize data as requested by principal investigator or supervisor; use common statistical programs requiring the application of job control language in generating and organizing data.
    • Assist with development, communication and design of research findings to internal and external audiences, which may include web updates, social media, and/or white papers, for use in recruitment, educational, or awareness of programs, with guidance from supervisor.
    • Process study compensation payments and thank you letters to subjects upholding confidentiality practices upon completion of activities.
    • Orient and train new staff and/or students.
    • Adapt new, nonstandard methods outlined by supervisor in designing and evaluating phases of research projects, (i.e., educational materials, questionnaires, strategies for recruitment, data quality control procedures and processes). May follow up with Institutional Review Board (IRB) to ensure renewals are approved and completed, seeking guidance where necessary.
    • Plan and perform research tasks requiring initiative and judgment by applying basic knowledge and understanding of scientific theory when precedents do not provide specific guidance. General instruction provided by the supervisor as needed. May interpret study results in collaboration with supervisor or PI.

    This role will also involve working with relative independence under the project director to:

    • Manage and coordinate the day-to-day operations of the lab and community partnerships
    • Support research design, data management, statistical analyses, and academic writing
    • Coordinate and support training, implementation, and data collection of TRANSFROM

    Applicants should have related research experience and a desire to enhance expertise in understanding racial stress and trauma, ethnic-racial socialization, and the psychological health of Black adolescents and other youth of color.

    To be successful in this position, you will bring:

    Education & Experience:Bachelor of Arts degree or higher in an applicable social science related field, or combination of education and additional relevant experience in an applicable social science is required. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
    • General understanding of scientific theory and methods, typically gained through completion of an undergraduate degree in a related field.
    • General computer skills and ability to quickly learn and master computer programs.
    • Ability to work under deadlines with general guidance.
    • Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to complete detailed work accurately and in a timely and efficient manner.
    • Effective oral and written communication skills.
    • Ability to work with human study participants.
    Preferred education and experience: The ideal candidate will have experience in community implementation of mental health or wellness interventions, a background and interest in clinical or counseling psychology or in a related field (e.g., developmental psychology, human development and family studies, educational psychology) and two or more years of experience or education post undergraduate degree. Preferred Qualifications:
    • The ideal candidate will have strong quantitative data management and analysis skills (mixed methods are preferred). Experience or training in one or more programming languages and/or statistical software: R, SPSS, Mplus, SAS.
    • We seek applicants with experience in community implementation of mental health or wellness interventions and excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
    • Excellent written and verbal skills with grant writing and publishing experience preferred.
    Working Conditions
    • May be required to work some non-standard, extended or weekend hours in support of research work.

    The expected pay range for this position is $27.40 to $36.54 per hour.Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
