    Summary:

    Performs a variety of semi-skilled and technical skilled maintenance work in the operation, maintenance and repair of water and wastewater treatment facilities and systems.

    Selected candidate must pass City's drug screen and background check.

    Examples of Duties Essential Job Functions:
    Performs entry-level labor to assist in the operation and maintenance of water and wastewater systems. Predominantly functions on a construction crew performing excavation and repair of water and sewer lines.

    Related tasks include but are not limited to:

    Operating two ton crew trucks, operating dump trucks and light vehicles, operating backhoes, assisting licensed operators in the sanitation and disinfection of sewer and water lines, maintaining tools and equipment, performing preventative maintenance on motor vehicles; responding to emergency conditions; and maintaining written documentation of work orders, test results, and regulatory information.

    Operation of specialized water utility equipment may be required as skills progress. Perform other related duties as assigned. Must have the ability to follow written and oral instructions. Must follow City and departmental policies and procedures.

    Exposed to extreme heat, cold, rain, humidity, wetness, hazardous chemicals, insects, dust, poisonous plants, noxious smells, fumes, and physical stress from exertion.


    Other Important Duties:
    Must be able to follow detailed instructions and work with minimal supervision.
    Must be able to work rotating on-call/after-hour duty with other Department employees.
    Must be able to respond to emergency call back duty after hours and weekends. Performs administrative duties by entering data into the computer; compiling various reports.

    Runs tests by taking samples; running lab tests; recording daily results; resetting pumps or computer levels to ensure water purity filing results and compiling various reports for other agencies.

    Prepares for inspections by ensuring all equipment, records; lab procedures and facilities are clean and up to inspection.

    Performs plant operations by pumping scum pits and clarifiers; checking the oil levels on pumps; changing out filters and cylinders; inspecting and cleaning columns; checking and replacing skimmers; greasing gears; trickling filters; running centrifuge; and ensuring all equipment and pumps are operational.


    Required Knowledge and Skills:

    • Skill to operate heavy and light equipment.
    • Skill to use a variety of tools appropriate for the work assigned.
    • Knowledge of Water Utility installation, maintenance and repair.
    • Knowledge of safety hazards and safety practices.

    Preferred Education, Experience and Certifications:
    High school diploma or GED is required.
    Valid Texas Driver's License.
    One year experience is required.
    Must be able to obtain a class "D" (TCEQ) water license within the first 2yr's of employment.


    Environmental Factors and Conditions/Physical Requirements:

    The incumbent works in an outdoor environment or in confined spaces; frequent exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions or hazards.

    Majority of work performed outside or with exposure to risk. Exposed to physical exertion such as bending, lifting, stooping, reaching, pulling, and pushing. Ability to lift up to 100 pounds.


    Equipment and Tools Utilized:
    Backhoe, bulldozer, asphalt roller, dump truck, grade all, mowers, generator, shovel, sharp shooter,Wrench, and sockets, weed-eaters, misc. tools for maintenance, jackhammer, concrete saw, chain saw, probing rods, hammer, pipe tools.
    Hard hat, gloves, earplugs, safety glasses, vest, steel toe boots, rubber boots.
    Pumps, meters, lab equipment, SCBA. Typical Qualifications
