- Develop, coordinate, andsupervise the facility dental program to include advising andinstructing inmates/residents in the cause and prevention of dentaldisease.
- Recruit, schedule, train, supervise and evaluate theperformance of any subordinate staff. Consult with otherhealth care staff and coordinate specialized or emergency dentalcare as needed.
- Control and inventorymedications, syringes, dental instruments, and other dentalsupplies or equipment as required by establishedprocedures.
- Keep work area clean;use or direct the use of appropriate sanitation and infectioncontrol methods.
- Prepare and maintain dental files and a variety ofstandard narrative, statistical, summary and/or operationalrecords, reports, and logs, using appropriate grammar, to includefiling, alphabetizing and labeling; review reports and recordsproduced by staff; properly processes all reports and documents ina timely manner.
- Maintain absolutesecurity and confidentiality of all dentalrecords.
- Routinely audit dental files for documentation of allprovided services.
- Monitor the provision ofany required contract services. Coordinate professionaldental and related services performed by externalproviders.
- Screen all requests forrecords and approve/disapprove responses as appropriate followingpolicy and procedures.
- Provide input forfacility dental budget requests. Identify financialresponsibility (inmate/resident, corporate, insurance company,etc.) for all incurred expenses.Complete logs of alldental billings and assist the business office by reviewing alldental billings at least monthly.Evaluate and recommend methods of improving operationalefficiency and cost effectiveness of dental and relatedservices
- Audit pharmacy use for adherence toformulary.
- Monitor and supervisestrict staff compliance with all applicable pharmacy laws,especially those covering controlledsubstances.
- Observe and recordinmate/resident behavior.
- Maintain equipment andsupplies as required; order replacement items in a timely manner;requisition appropriate purchases via the purchase ordersystem.
- Inspect the dental unit for items that could be used ascontraband by inmates/residents; securely store supplies andequipment or provide for their safedisposal.
- Monitor and evaluate physical safety requirements ofboth patients and staff to provide a safe workingenvironment.
- Attend seminars,workshops, conferences, etc., asrequired.
- Accept on-call status. Monitor safetypractices: prepare and disseminate safety and accident reports asrequired by policy; take appropriate action in cases of serious andunusual incidents and emergencies.Communicate effectively and coherently toadministration, staff, inmates/residents, visitors,and the general public, particularly in situationsrequiring tact, diplomacy, understanding, fairness, firmness andgood judgment. This includes giving information,instructions, and directions, mediating disputes, and providingreliable testimony, in court and other formalsettings.
- Read, analyze, comprehend, and interpret technicalprocedures or governmental regulations, legal and non-legaldocuments, including the processing of such documents as medicalinstructions, commitment orders, summons and other legalwrits.
- Coordinate the movement ofinmates/residents to and from different areas for dentaltreatment.
- Initiate and completeinvestigations and inquiries with accuracy by gathering informationand evidence, interviewing, and obtaining the statements ofvictims, witnesses, suspects, and confidential informers; exerciseindependent judgment by determining when probable cause exists torecommend or take disciplinaryaction.
- Reliably and repetitivelyidentify inmates/residents by visualmeans.
- Perform searches of people andobjects capable of concealing contraband. Search buildings andoutdoor areas that will involve detecting and identifying objectsand detaining people. Engage in functions in confined areas, physicallychecking the doors, windows, and other areas to verify they aresecure.
- Endure verbal and mental abusewhen confronted with the hostile views and opinions ofinmates/residents and others encountered in an antagonisticenvironment. Take appropriate action to prevent or diffusepotentially disruptivesituations.Perform rescue functions at accidents, emergencies,and disasters to include administering basic emergency medical aid,physically removing people away from dangerous situations, andsecuring and evacuating people from confinedareas
- Define problems, collect data, establishfacts, and draw valid conclusions; apply management techniques toproblems of administration and devise workablesolutions. Add, subtract, multiply and divide using wholenumbers, common fractions and decimals; work with mathematicalconcepts such as fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and applyconcepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions topractical situations.Interpret an extensive variety of technicalinstructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with severalabstract and concretevariables.Endeavor tocomply with the requirements of applicable regulations, laws,rules, procedures, policies, standards and/orcontract.
- Remain alert at all times and react quickly,efficiently and calmly in emergency and other high stresssituations. QUALIFICATIONS:Graduate of an approvedschool of dentistry and licensure as a dentist in the state ofemployment.
- At least one year of experiencepreferred. Must demonstrate goodoral and written communicationskills.
- A valid driver's license ispreferred, unless required by contract or applicablestatute.
