The University of Tennessee Medical Center (UTMC), in partnership with Korn Ferry, invites nominations and expressions of interest for the position of Director, Cancer Institute.

With its mission to serve through healing, education and discovery, The University of Tennessee Medical Center (UTMC) has a distinguished and extensive history of unwavering commitment to providing exceptional healthcare.

As the region's academic medical center, Magnet recognized hospital and Level I Trauma Center, UTMC serves as a major referral center for East Tennessee, Southeast Kentucky, and Western North Carolina.

The 710-bed hospital also is home of the region's only dedicated Heart Hospital, only adult and pediatric transplant center, the region's first certified comprehensive stroke center, a private-room neonatal intensive care unit and serves as a regional perinatal center.

And UTMC's Cancer Institute is the region's largest center for cancer treatment.

Home to 450 Cancer Institute team members, which includes providers, nurses, pharmacists, radiation therapists, radiologic technologists, and multiple support specialists, the Cancer Institute serves approximately 50,000 patients per year with 3,500 new cancer cases annually.

Occupying a 100,000 square foot building that houses their clinical services, radiation oncology facility, oncology pharmacy, surgical oncology, gynecologic oncology, medical oncology/hematology, transplant and cellular therapy program, palliative therapy, as well as 5 satellite oncology and chemotherapy infusion centers and 2 breast centers, the Cancer Institute is well-positioned to provide quality cancer care, not only within the region but also on a broader scale.

Under the leadership of Dr. John L.

Bell, the Cancer Institute has reached significant milestones, including the establishment of a Biobank, the development of a comprehensive lymphedema program providing lymphedema prevention, management, and treatment to include advanced surgical options, the completion of 41 transplants (including CAR T-cell and TILs therapy) completed to date, and receiving AGCME approval for a medical oncology fellowship, to name a few.

Since the Cancer Institute's inception in 1988, Dr.

Bell has been serving as its Director and has built a premier destination program that is widely recognized within the region.

After 35 years of dedication, commitment, and leadership, Dr. John Bell will be stepping down and is preparing to entrust the responsibilities to his successor.

A national search is underway, and the Cancer Institute is well positioned to move forward to the next transformative phase.

The next UTMC Cancer Institute Director will be responsible for providing the overall leadership, vision, and direction, which includes oversight and development of cancer-focused training and education, research programs, multidisciplinary clinical service lines, and community engagement.

Poised to continue its tradition of providing quality cancer care, not only within the region but also on a broader scale, and aiming to become an NCI-Designated Cancer Center, the role of the new Cancer Institute Director will be critical in providing executive leadership and enabling the Institute to achieve its strategic objectives.

Reporting directly to Dr.

Lisa Duncan, who serves as the Senior Vice President for Centers of Excellence and Chief Quality Officer at UTMC Center, the Cancer Institute Director will oversee and integrate the cancer mission institution-wide, influencing cancer policies, cancer research, education and training, and clinical practice across the Medical Center, including the Graduate School of Medicine.

This individual will be a luminary in the field, deeply committed to the research mission and values of uncovering the causes of cancer, developing effective treatments, and advancing cancer prevention through research, clinical care, education, and community engagement.

Further, the Cancer Institute Director will be a highly respected oncology leader and critical steward for an organizational climate and culture which supports and values diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, and who is committed to delivering hands-on, personalized cancer care that reflects the values of UTMC.

The ideal candidate will have earned an MD, PhD, or MD/PhD; and if they hold an MD degree, be board certified in one or more oncology specialties and/or sub-specialties and be eligible for licensure in the state of Tennessee.
