    Description

    The Manager of Laboratory Services (Bone Marrow Transplant) is responsible for operational workflow, technical support and advise, administrative management of the section and assuring proficiency of staff, and their compliance with mandatory continuing education requirements, accurate instrument operation, performance of maintenance, troubleshooting and quality control. Assists in the selection of staff, orients, and trains new hires. Under the direction of the Processing Medical Director, he/she has the responsibility of quality management program for the BMT laboratory. Develops, validates, and implements new procedures. Compiles data for monthly reports, CIBMTR and departmental quality indicators. Maintain, update, and revise the department's SOPs as new methods and regulatory requirements are introduced. Assists with budget planning, ordering equipment, reagents and lab supplies and recovery of patient charges. Responsible for the employee relationships, customer service, performance improvement, and maintaining intra and interdepartmental communication and compliance with licensing and accreditation standards and auditing process. Responsible for integration of research protocols in BMT lab related to cellular therapies. Keeps current with new technology through literature review and attendance at local and national conferences. Incident/Problem management, including identifying, troubleshooting, root cause analysis and development of corrective / preventative actions. Regularly meet with staff to ensure daily operations are running smoothly and that staff have a clear understanding what tasks need to be accomplished. Participates collaboratively in department meetings committees, projects, and teams to resolve conflicts and meet institutional goals. Assisting clinical team scheduling collections and infusions. Working in collaboration with Bone Marrow transplant program director to evaluate program effectiveness, increase patient volume and mange overall program success and operation./7 accountability for the laboratory.

    Essential Duties:

  • Writes, revises, updates and reviews policies and procedures to ensure compliance with FACT accreditation and California DHS Biologics License (AABB) requirements and standards.
  • Implements and ensures compliance with the operating policies and procedures of the department by regular monitoring of all activities in the laboratory.
  • Implements and ensures compliance with hospital/university policies and procedures as it relates to Safety, Infection Control, Human Resources, HIPAA, Employee Health, Information Systems, etc.
  • Reinforces the use of personal protective equipment by staff and maintains a safe work environment by requiring safe work practices.
  • Ensures proficiency and compliance of staff in all laboratory procedures through training, direct supervision, observations and documented competency assessments. Provides technical leadership to the department.
  • Communicates with employees on day to day operations of the section. Reviews implemented changes with all staff.
  • Performs performance appraisals of staff, counsels, recommends commendations and/or disciplinary action.
  • Screens, interviews applicants and makes recommendations for hiring.
  • Ensures adequate /7 coverage of the laboratory by scheduling, assigning work to subordinates and/or personally covering the section as needed. Displays flexibility to cover the lab in emergencies and difficult staffing situations.
  • Develops systems for auditing Processing Facility activities to assure compliance with written SOP's and policies. Essential =%
  • As directed by the Medical Director as part of BMT Quality Plan (and collaboration with the per diem senior CLS who audits her processing work) collects, reviews and prepares QC, QA, and internal audit reports for presentation to the quarterly QM meetings, Hospital leadership and MOTC with recommendations for improvement Conducts regular review of all quality control, maintenance records, processing records, etc to ensure accuracy and completeness of documentation and compliance with laboratory standards and SOP's. Reports deviations of SOP's to the Medical Director immediately and performs corrective action.
  • Responsible for developing department operating budget, administration, analysis of variances and regular monitoring of staffing, supply and equipment expenses.
  • Ensures equipment are maintained and operating at all times by scheduling maintenance calls, and troubleshooting problems
  • As needed, personally performs all processing procedures competently, accurately and efficiently within his/her scope following standard laboratory policies and procedures.
  • % of processing work performed personally is reviewed by the Medical Director upon completion.
  • Coordinates and integrates department services on intradepartmental, interdepartmental and hospital-wide levels.

  • Required Qualifications:

  • Req Bachelor's degree
  • Req 4 years Experience in a bone marrow transplant laboratory or equivalent to include Stem Cell processing/preparation for testing and/or infusion.
  • Req Commitment to continuous quality improvement and results driven outcomes.
  • Req Excellent communication skills both oral and written.
  • Preferred Qualifications:

  • Pref Clinical Laboratory Scientist - CLS
  • Required Licenses/Certifications:

  • Req Fire Life Safety Training (LA City) If no card upon hire, one must be obtained within days of hire and maintained by renewal before expiration date. (Required within LA City only)
