- Assists with the inspection, installation, maintenance and repair of mechanical equipment including, but not limited to, pumps, generators, small engines, compressors, blowers and electrical motors.
- Assists with the installation, repair and or replacement of such parts to include, but not limited to, valves, bars, shafts, bearings and sleeves.
- Assists with inspections, maintenance, diagnosis and operational testing of mechanical systems to include, but not limited to, hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical systems.
- Assists with welding, fabricating and other mechanical activities essential to equipment maintenance.
- Assists with the repair and maintenance of small engines.
- Assists with general landscaping duties to include, but not limited to, mowing grass, and trimming or removal of trees.
- Assists in conducting vehicle, material, and equipment inventory.
- Operates variety of power tools and machinery necessary to complete mechanical work.
- Performs tasks in a safe manner, in compliance with safety regulations and County standards.
- Responds to after-hour emergency calls and performs on-call maintenance duties.
- Maintains detailed work records, files and reports through CityWorks.
- Performs other related duties as required.
- Knowledge of the principles of electrical and mechanical maintenance as applicable to wastewater treatment, water treatment, and sanitary sewer pump stations.
- Knowledge of the common practices, tools methods and techniques used in electrical and mechanical maintenance, installation and repair.
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards and proper safety precautions involved in water and wastewater treatment operations, collection, and distribution.
- Knowledge of the principles of the operation of pumps, motors and related treatment plant and collection system equipment.
- Skill in the use and care of common tools and equipment employed in the electrical and mechanical maintenance and installation, carpentry and plumbing trades.
- Ability to perform basic computer operations and input detailed data into computerized maintenance management system.
- Ability to read and interpret blue prints, drawings and equipment operation and maintenance manuals.
- Ability to work in confined spaces.
- Ability to operate machinery used in mechanical and electrical maintenance.
- Ability to detect and repair malfunctions in mechanical and electrical equipment.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to prepare and maintains simple records.

General Statement of Job
Under general supervision, performs skilled maintenance and repair of mechanical equipment for all Utilities/Public Works facilities including water treatment, wastewater treatment, compost, sanitary sewer pump stations and water booster stations. Work involves installing, maintaining, and repairing pumps, motors, valves and other associated mechanical equipment. Employee is also responsible for documenting work responsibilities, repairs, and inspections in the County's computerized maintenance management system, CityWorks. Employee must exercise some independent judgment in completing assigned tasks. Reports to Manager, Plant Maintenance.
This position is essential. Personnel occupying this position may be scheduled to work irrespective of weather conditions and/or when general County offices are closed.
Special Duties & Responsibilities
High School Diploma or equivalent and one (1) year of experience in mechanical maintenance and repair work; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities.
Must possess a valid driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Must obtain Forklift Certification within one (1) year of hire.
Must conform to OSHA regulations that may require removal of some facial hair.
Must obtain OSHA 10 Hour certification within one (1) week of hire.
