    GENERAL DESCRIPTIONPermanent, full-time position managing the floating plant navigation and operations performing maintenance on the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway. (includes heavy lifts, transport of equipment and materials, grapple and clam bucket operations, etc.) Must have applicable USCG license and push boat experience. Floating plant basic configuration consists of M/V Tenn-Tom Towing Vessel (M24745X - 160 long tons) and SAM-2301 Floating Crane Barge with a Liebherr HS8300HD Duty Cycle Crane. Schedule is 4, 10-hour days (Monday through Thursday).The Captain is a licensed mariner who has overall command and control of the navigation, maneuvering, cargo handling, stowage, crane operations, communications and safe handling of the floating plant. The Captain oversees operations and maintenance of all on-board equipment including machinery, engines, barge, crane and safety equipment, and manages the daily operations of the plant on assigned duties.

    ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS
    • Plan and ensure safe operation of the plant in all aspects.
    • Control adjustment of sail, stability and stress of the floating plant
    • Develop emergency and damage control plans, and handle emergency situations.
    • Establish watch-keeping arrangements and procedures.
    • Forecast weather and oceanographic conditions.
    • Lead and manage the floating plant crew.
    • Maneuver and handle the floating plant in all conditions.
    • Monitor and control compliance with legislative requirements and measures.
    • Operate remote controls of propulsion plant and engineering systems and services.
    • Organize and manage the provisions of medical care on board.
    • Assess reported defects and damage to all machinery, fuel and cargo spaces, hatch covers and ballast tanks, etc. and take appropriate action.
    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
    • Knowledgeable of all Marine state and federal regulations.
    • Technical knowledge of various Marine concepts, practices, and procedures.
    • Ability to perform the job in a safe and seamanlike manner in accordance with all company policies and procedures and state and federal regulations.
    • Advance knowledge in reading, understanding, and interpreting barge stability data, tank strapping charts, spud-equipped crane barge, crane operations, various tables, safety manuals, navigation books, and environmental manuals.
    • Advance knowledge with utilizing navigation aids such as charts, radar, AIS, depth finder, compass, and GPS.
    • Specialized knowledge of local winds, weather, tides, and current.
    • Ability to comply with and enforce standard policies and procedures.
    • Knowledge of equipment, policies, procedures to promote the safe and effective operations of a inland rivers/GIWW floating plant/push boat/barge tow operation.
    • Knowledge of principles and methods for moving cargo by sea.
    • Advanced knowledge on appropriate use of the emergency equipment located on the boat.
    • Ability to create, read, and understand complex documents, construction plans, load charts, tow configurations, and specification.
    • Ability to perform basic mathematical computations.
    • Ability to detect issues, and exercise resourcefulness in resolving problems.
    • Ability to solve personnel problems, make clear rational decisions in a crisis, and clearly formulate and communicate orders, coupled with the ability to perform both short and long-term planning to accomplish vessel and company goals.
    • Ability to use logic and reasoning to identify strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.

    • Ability to work a flexible schedule sometimes including weekends and holidays.
    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS
    • High school diploma or equivalent.
    • (5) years of experience in captaining a push boat and barge tow combination
    • Must have a current Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) as Master or Mate of Towing Vessels with an Unlimited Radar Observer endorsement, STCW 95, AB, HAZMAT with refresher every three (3) years.
    • Must be able to pass and maintain a Coast Guard physical exam for merchant mariners.
    • Valid driver's license record and must be qualified to operate a vehicle under the conditions of the Company's Driving Polices.
    • Required to successfully complete background check, MVR, and drug/alcohol screenings.
    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
    • Frequent walking and standing.
    • Must be able to tolerate rough seas, vibrations, heat, harsh weather conditions, confined spaces, and high noise levels.
    • Good manual dexterity.
    • Frequently lifts/carries up to 20 pounds with occasional lifting up to 50 pounds.
    • Frequent balancing, kneeling, reaching (full range), bending, handling, feeling, climbing, smelling, twisting, crawling and reaching; working in cramped and confined spaces.
    • Vision, speech, smell and hearing sufficient to perform essential tasks.
