    JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

    We are searching for an Engineering Designer to join our Mechanical and Electrical Design and Drafting (MEDD) Service Center at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University. ARL's purpose is to research and develop innovative solutions to challenging scientific, engineering, and technology problems in support of the Navy, the Department of Defense (DoD), and the Intel Community (IC).

    You will:
    • Assist research engineering programs needing mechanical design support through collaboration with R&D engineers and engineering support specialists
    • Participate in meetings and lead design reviews; operating as the lead designer of a team to address design, material, and component needs
    • Respond to requests for information from the manufacturing and assembly teams, assisting in the resolution of issues
    • Create concepts, designs, and 3D models of complex mechanical and electrical systems including the integration and packaging of components and sub-assemblies into the overall system level assembly model
    • Maintain all required compliance training by ARL and related to business systems, safety, and security
    • Build proficiency with all design & data management software tools used to perform design & documentation tasks
    • Create 2D detail drawings for complex fabrication parts and larger assemblies using accepted standards, methods and techniques; including responsibility for ensuring proper design intent, fitment/tolerance analysis, and suitability of the design for the intended application
    • Provide work status updates to senior personnel and engineering staff
    • Direct the work of junior personnel
    Typical requirements include an Associate's Degree or higher in drafting or a related discipline; 10+ years related experience (or an equivalent combination of education and experience).

    Required skills/experience areas include:
    • Familiarity with and experience in the design of complex mechanical systems
    • Knowledge of and experience using 3D modeling software
    • Knowledge of and experience using Product Lifecycle management (PLM) software
    • Superior knowledge of industry standards (particularly ASME Y14.5)
    • General knowledge of commonly used materials and finishes for mechanical systems designed for undersea applications
    • Experience in mentoring other designers and leading design teams including organizing and managing the allocation of work as well as tracking and reporting on progress
    • Experience in leading or facilitating mechanical design reviews
    Preferred skills/experience areas include:
    • Experience as the formal supervisor of other staff members
    • Knowledge of and proficiency using Siemens NX 3D modeling software
    • Knowledge of and proficiency using Siemens Teamcenter PLM software
    • Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat
    • Knowledge of MEDD Service Center standards
    • Active government security clearance at the SECRET level
    Your working location will be on-site at one of our facilities in State College, PA. An option for a hybrid schedule combining on-site and work from home locations may be possible after a 6 month period.
