- Makes onsite inspections during all phases of construction to ensure compliance with various codes, including those published by the International Code Council (ICC) and the National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA).
- Researches and verifies compliance with code, zoning ordinances.
- Maintains computer records and reports concerning inspections, licenses, permits, certificates, etc.
- Consults with engineers, architects, builders, and contractors to discuss plans and compliance with various codes.
- Compiles information and writes departmental reports and correspondence.
- Investigates complaints of unsafe, uninhabited, and unsanitary structures.
- Answers questions in person, on telephone and via email regarding zoning, building ordinance compliance, and citizens' complaints.
- Provides customer service to other departments and public as needed.
- Performs onsite license checks of plumbers, electricians and others that are required to be licensed under city ordinance or State and Federal Law.
- Provides clerical support to fulfill staffing needs as assigned by the Deputy Building Official.
- Distributes literature and/or answers questions regarding available public services in the area.
- Performs residential plan reviews for compliance and applicable codes and ordinances.
- Assists Inspector I's or is assigned with more complex inspections requiring additional experience or knowledge to complete.
- Valid Texas driver's license, with acceptable driving record.
- Plumbing Inspector License issued by the State Board of Plumbing Examiners, preferred, (or able to obtain within 1 years of hire)

The Position
JOB SUMMARY
Inspects residential and commercial construction ensuring structural, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical compliance with approved permits. Reviews various building plans and permit applications to ensure compliance with city zoning, building and other related codes.

BUILDING INSPECTOR I
High School Diploma, or its equivalent, plus at least one (1) to three (3) years of experience in building inspections or the construction field;
or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Certifications and Licenses
High School Diploma, or its equivalent, plus at least three (3) to five (5) years of experience in building inspections or the construction field;
or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Municipal experience preferred.
Certifications and Licenses
Knowledge of: technical aspects of building inspections, building codes, and city ordinances; construction, plumbing, electrical systems, framing, foundation, and heating and air conditioning systems; contractor licensing requirement; and state and federal regulations and guidelines relative to the city's building inspection requirements.
Skill/Ability to: operate light trucks, passenger vehicles climb ladders and stairs and traverse the type of uneven ground typically found on construction sites in all weather conditions; interpret and communicate to others zoning laws, building codes, and other related statutes; read and interpret detailed blueprints; demonstrate proficiency in both oral and written communication; use standard office equipment including copiers and multi-line phone systems; operate computers using standard word processing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with other city employees, commissions and boards, state and local government agencies, contractors, builders, and the general public. Able to lift up to 75 lbs.
