    **Duties**

    ** Summary**

    This position is located with the Agricultural Research Service, Dietary Prevention of Obesity-Related Disease Research in Grand Forks, ND.

    The incumbent plans, implements, and reports the results of research designed to elucidate the nutritional/health values of meal patterns, meal timing, foods, and practices that influence the availability/bioavailability of food components.

    **Responsibilities**

    + Leads an independent research laboratory that studies, expands and complements an existing research program regarding the composition of diets and meals and/or timing of meals to maintain health and prevent disease.

    + Conceives, leads and implements both independent research and multidisciplinary, team-based research (basic, clinical and/or translational) and analyzes experimental data.

    + Submits at least two manuscripts per year for publication of experimental results in peer-reviewed journals and presents information at scientific meetings and at other research institutions.

    + Prepares written work products based on research to be published in professional articles, publications, and technical abstracts.

    + Develops novel and innovative scientific evidence to support a healthful food supply.

    + As appropriate, works with and develops relationships with community, industry, governmental, and academic stakeholders. **Travel Required**

    **Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.**

    **Basic Requirements:**

    **Applicants must meet one of the following requirements for all grade levels:**

    For the 630 (Dietetics & Nutrition) Series:

    + Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in the fields of dietetics, food, nutrition, food service management, institution management, or related science. The educational program must have been accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (external link) (ACEND), or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. For dietitian positions, the curriculum must have been in accordance with the qualifying requirements established by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) (external link) (formerly American Dietetic Association (external link) (ADA) prior to January 1, 2012) in effect at the time of graduation.

    + Completion of a coordinated undergraduate program, internship, or other clinical component approved by AND (formerly ADA) for dietitians or nutritionists.

    + Professional registration as a Registered Dietitian (RD) or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN). **Additional Requirements:**

    In addition to meeting the basic requirements described above, applicants must also meet additional qualification requirements as stated below.

    **GS-12:**

    Applicants must demonstrate at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service or possess a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or possess an equivalent combination of graduate level education and experience. Graduate education must be directly related to the work of the position and must have equipped applicants with the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work.

    Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. The specialized experience requirements for the GS-12 level of this position are:

    + Demonstrated publications in research related to the composition of diets and meals and/or timing of meals to maintain health and prevent disease.

    + Demonstrated responsibility for all phases of research. **GS-13:**

    Applicants must demonstrate at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. The specialized experience requirements for the GS-13 level of this position are:

    + Demonstrated independence as an investigator in research related to the composition of diets and meals and/or timing of meals to maintain health and prevent disease.

    + Using sophisticated as well as standard methods and a high degree of originality used for the research.

    + Serving on technical committees and sought for consultation. **GS-14:**

    Applicants must demonstrate at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-13 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. The specialized experience requirements for the GS-14 level of this position are:

    + Demonstrated leadership of a team of scientists related to the composition of diets and meals and/or timing of meals to maintain health and prevent disease and has conducted collaborative research in this area of research.

    + Demonstrated significant advancements and leadership in the field.

    + Using sophisticated as well as standard methods and a high degree of originality used for the research.

    + Serving on technical committees and sought for consultation.

    Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. **To further support your qualifications, it is strongly recommended that you submit a one-page abstract of your MS thesis and/or Ph.D. dissertation.
