    Salary:
    Lawrenceville, NJ: $121,485 (Step 01) to $157,934 (Step 10)
    NOTE: First time hires to the Federal Government are typically hired at the Step 01.

    This is not a remote position. This position requires the employee to physically report to work at the office designated by the vacancy announcement. Periodic telework may be approved.

    Duties

    As a Supervisory Hydrologist for the Investigations Branch of the New Jersey Water Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:

  • Serve as principal liaison with cooperators and stakeholder as a primary scientific program representative for the New Jersey Water Science Center.
  • Work with Water Science Center Director and Investigations Branch Chief (Associate Director) on matters concerning hydrologic studies sharing in the planning, development, and direction of new water­ resources studies.
  • Responsible for oversight and coordination of an Investigations section, supervising and assigning work tasks for a team of professional and technical personnel in support of scientific water-resources investigations and data-collection activities.
  • Conduct and participate in complex technical aspects of water-resources investigations, particularly in areas involving water monitoring, characterization, and transport modeling.
  • Review reports prepared in the section for editorial correctness and assures technical accuracy.
  • Oversee the development of innovative communication tools and programmatic material.

  • Qualifications

    BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT : At all grade levels, applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for the GS-1315 Hydrologist series.

    A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in physical or natural science, or engineering. The course work must have included at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in calculus (including both differential and integral calculus), and at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in physics. The course work must have included at least 30 semester hours or the equivalent in any combination of courses in hydrology, the physical sciences, geophysics, chemistry, engineering science, soils, mathematics, aquatic biology, atmospheric science, meteorology, geology, oceanography, or the management or conservation of water resources.
    **OR
    B. A combination of education and experience-course work as shown in "A" above (30 semester hours or the equivalent in any combination of courses as specified in "A" above which must include at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in calculus (including both differential and integral calculus), and at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in physics ), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above.

    For GS-13:

    In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must have one year of specialized experience in hydrology that is equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal service.

    Examples of such experience include planning, executing and reporting on original hydrologic studies or ongoing hydrologic studies requiring a fresh approach to resolve new problems. The complexity of this work typically required extensive modification and adaptation of standard procedures, methods, and techniques, and the development of totally new methods and techniques to address novel or obscure problems for which guidelines or precedents were not substantially applicable. At this level, Hydrologists have extensive knowledge of the principles of hydrology and highly developed ability in their application, and wide latitude for the exercise of independent judgment to perform scientific work of marked difficulty and responsibility.
