Big Law Associate - New York, United States - Hire Counsel

    Default job background
    Full time
    Description

I'm looking for Big Law associates who want to make a move.

I work with law firms of all shapes and sizes for temp and perm placements at the higher level of things but today I'm hoping to talk to the Big Law folks out there.

(This is no offense to the non-Big Law lawyers – I was, and still am, one of you. Ten years of scraping by in the halls of the Daley Center here in Chicago never leaves your soul. I love you all.)

Anyways. Big Law folks. Let me know who you are and what you want. Things out there are weird and I get it: my wife is one of "you people" who lived through the 2008 crash and when I see layoffs happening, I know how it can be devastating. Frankly, I find some of the blogs keeping track of what's happening to you to be ghoulish (even if it does come with the territory). So, if you've been laid off, think it might happen, or are just kinda bored with where you're at, shoot me an Email and a copy of your resume.

I can't promise to get you a job – I could, but that would be a terrible long-term strategy for building good will – but I work directly with hiring managers at firms everywhere, in addition to the in-house clients we service.

To give you a *VERY BROAD* (I cannot emphasize enough this point) overview of what money looks like:

    Temp work: $100-150/hr.

Most of this is remote, with NY and CA barred lawyers in the highest demand. The right gig will get you 30-40 hours a week (these are hours WORKED not billed) and run 6-9 months. Though, I've also seen an uptick in the 20 hours a week space, for those who aren't looking to take on a full load.

Perm associates: $200-350k base, depending on experience.

You probably have a decent idea of the market, based on what you make now, and there aren't huge deviations to be found. But, there are differences when it comes to type of work, opportunity to grow into a partner track, or sliding into a more of-counsel role. Heck, maybe you just want a change of scenery. None of this is anything more than having conversations with people – no one is committing to a new life just yet.

In-house counsel: $150-200k – but you get to have a life.

As for what practice areas: ALL OF THEM.

My gut tells me we're going to see more in the debt servicing world in 2023 – from the underwriting of debt securities to refinancing and restructuring commercial loans – but in the last year alone I've placed litigators doing products liability litigation in CA, PI in Chicago, transactional attorneys doing import-export contract negotiations remotely, and almost everything in between.

Email me directly or send it via the LinkedIn option.

And, for everyone else: I LOVE YOU Go ahead and send me your resumes, too. The more niche your experience, the better. And list it ALL on your CV. I'd rather see a 5-page resume that goes in depth with how you've filed 10K forms or performed due diligence on a cross-border merger, than 10 years of practice culled down to one page.

    Good luck out there

    Sincerely,

    Mike
