    Description

    The Director, Marine Science & Technology position is a full-time, 12-month professional position.

    This position is responsible for assisting the Dean of Marine Science and Technology with operational oversight of the five departments in the Division of Marine Science & Technology (Marine Resource Management; Diving Business and Technology; Marine Engineering, Management, and Seamanship/Welding; Marine Environmental Technology; and Engineering Technology).

    The position requires a wide variety of experience, skills, and knowledge of marine professional careers. This position maintains a 37.5-hour week and reports directly to the Dean of Marine Science and Technology.
    Examples of Duties


    • Provides leadership for on-going development of the Division of Marine Science and Technology.
    • Works closely with the Dean to coordinate development of annual department budgets, monitors budgetary process and progress, and coordinates the update and development of course lab fees.
    • Works with the Dean and departmental faculty to prepare Strategic Planning Online Unit Plans, Program Learning Outcome Assessments, and Departmental Program reviews.
    • Works with the faculty to determine and document Program Learning Outcomes to be assessed every three(3) years.
    • Assists the Dean with administrative oversight for all departments within the Division.
    • Supervises and coordinates the orientation, and evaluation of part-time staff, volunteers, and contractors within the respective academic departments of the division.
    • Supervises the Manager, Diving Facilities, Science Lab Technician, College Fleet Captain, and the Division's part-time employees.
    • Works with the Dean to manage enrollment of regularly scheduled BS, AS, and AAS degrees within the Division.
    • Assists with academic advising, as necessary.
    • Coordinates with faculty, Diving Facilities Manager, College Fleet Captain, and part-time technicians and lab assistants to ensure departmental lab areas have necessary lab equipment, materials, supplies and are well maintained and ready for use.
    • Coordinates with the College Fleet Captain to ensure that all College-owned vessels and trailers are well maintained and are compliant with required state and USCG requirements (e.g. registration, Certificate of Inspection).
    • Works closely with the Dean, departmental advisory committees, and department faculty in review, revision, and development of department curriculum at the course and program level and prepares recommendations for modification if needed.
    • Assists with externally funded projects and sponsored grants within the Division, as necessary.
    • Provides academic information for College publications, annual reports, and other documents as required by the Dean or the marketing department.
    • Assists with faculty and students concerns and grievances within the Division with guidance from the Office of Talent Acquisition, Development, and Accountability, while keeping the Dean abreast of the situation.
    • Assists in all College recruitment & retention efforts as appropriate.
    • Participates in institutional and divisional committees (e.g., Diving Control Board), as required.
    • Participates in professional development opportunities as requested.
    • Networks in the local, regional, and international academic, professional, and business
    communities.

    • Assists in implementing College policies and achieving College goals according to College philosophy and procedures.
    • Manages third-party use of the Underwater Training Area.
    • Coordinates contractual dive training courses (ACOE, NOAA, etc.), including contract negotiations, equipment requirements, staffing and scheduling, etc.
    • Coordinates vessel rentals including contracts and required documentation.
    • Participates and assists with efforts, activities, and responsibilities within the Academic Affairs Division with regards to accreditation and reaffirmation.
    • Ensures all departments have active and appropriately constituted advisory committees that provide useful feedback, as applicable.
    • Responsible for maintaining and growing industry partnerships and memberships.
    • Responsible for ensuring that the staff and students have insurance, as appropriate.
    • Serves as the Designated Employee Representative for the Maritime Consortium.
    • Responsible for reviewing and updating policies and procedures related to Marine Science and Technology activities (e.g., Use of Marine Vessel, Underwater Training Area).

    Qualifications

    • Knowledge of the procedures and policies of a PADI Career-Oriented College Diving Program (COCDP), preferred.
    • Knowledge of regulations and procedures required to operate and maintain compliance of inspected passenger vessels.
    • Proven ability to work well with others required.
    • Skills in working with individuals and groups for the purpose of serving community needs and providing an educational program to meet those needs.
    • Knowledge of College mission, policies, procedures, and services.

    Education and Qualifications:

    • Master's degree required.
    • Three (3) years' managerial work experience is preferred.
    • Three (3) years' teaching experience at the community college level or higher is preferred. (A comparable amount of training, education or experience may be substituted for the above minimum qualifications)

    Licenses, Certifications or Registrations:

    • AAUS Scientific Diver certification preferred.
    • PADI OWSI certification or higher, preferred.
    • DAN Instructor preferred.
    • USCG 25-ton (or higher) Master USCG captain license preferred.

    Physical Skills:

    • Ability to be mobile and to present lectures and demonstrations

    Environmental Conditions:

    • Works inside in an office environment and outside as required.
    • Works in an underwater environment, as appropriate.

    MEDICAL - The College offers full-time employees a choice of Medical Insurance plans and pays the full cost of employee premiums.

    Dependent coverage is available at a group rate through payroll deduction. Available plans include a traditional PPO and a High-Deductible PPO attached to a Health Savings Account.

    DENTAL AND VISION - Voluntary dental and vision insurance is offered through payroll deduction.


    LIFE INSURANCE - The College provides each employee with term life insurance payable to a beneficiary at the rate of one times (1x) the employee's annual salary rounded up to the next thousand up to a maximum of $50,000.

    FLORIDA RETIREMENT SYSTEM - Full-time and regular part-time employees participate in the Florida Retirement System (FRS).

    The College contributes the current retirement percentage of the individual's salary, and the employee would contribute the current retirement percentage based on their salary.

    PAID TUITION - Tuition fees for credit courses taken at the College are waived for employees and their eligible dependents, including domestic partners.

    Tuition and student fees are waived for non-credit physical education courses.

    Contingent upon approval, $1,000 reimbursement is available each fiscal year through Staff & Program Development (S&PD), for completion of course work toward a degree which results in demonstrated benefit to the College.
