    Position Purpose

    The Assistant Director will work in tandem with the director to support, enhance and expand the reputation and strategic presence of the University of Central Missouri.

    The AD will be expected to step into the director's role as necessary and/or directed. Therefore this person must demonstrate the experience and progressive skills necessary to protect and promote the university.

    This role is pivotal to the health of the university's reputation and therefore directly impacts the ability of the university to recruit and maintain good status with the state of Missouri.

    The Assistant Director will partner with the university's executive director of government relations in order to assist with the communication of UCM's legislative priorities to external organizations, with the intent of furthering state and federal support for the university.

    Understands and strategically navigates the complex constituencies of the university, including internally and externally, such as students, faculty, staff, alumni, donors, lawmakers and the local, regional and national news media.

    The AD is required to be self-directed and will stand in as the Chief Public Information Officer in the event of a crisis if the Director for University Communications and Media Relations is unavailable.

    The AD serves as a member of the university's crisis response team; and serves on the threat assessment team in the event the Director for University Communications and Media Relations is unable to attend.

    The Assistant Director and the Director are the primary individuals responsible for identifying, researching, evaluating, and writing stories from UCM that aim to enhance its visibility and reputation and communicate its mission and performance to the public.

    The AD assists the Director in strengthening university media relationships spanning local, regional, and national outlets.

    This involves taking a leadership role in developing media strategies, maintaining key media contacts, managing news dissemination, and aligning media activities with the university's strategic communications objectives.

    Provides writing, editing and creative support for other Integrated Marketing and Communications projects, and assists in planning and promoting special events that have campus wide impact.

    The AD will also maintain daily content of the News and Events web page and manage content of the university's daily online newsletter, UCM Daily.

    The AD will act in an advisory capacity to the Digital Media Specialist, identifying areas where social media can support and enhance news media strategy.

    The AD will assist the Director for University Communications with writing support for key administrative offices, upon request, including the Office of the President to write copy for internal and external communication that can include talking points for speeches, news releases, public statements, letters, and email, as well as writing for UCM Magazine.

    The AD serves as a co-supervisor, representing the Office of Integrated Marketing and Communications, to assist the academic program, Innovative Public Relations, with duties that include attending IPR weekly meetings, providing editing support for student blogs, news releases and other communication materials.

    The AD will become proficient with and utilize university software to distribute news and monitor the performance of press releases.

    The ADwill also monitor social media for trending topics and potential reputational threats, and assist the Director in preparing, distributing and presenting quarterly news media engagement performance reports.

    Education & Formal Training Bachelor's degree (Specify field(s) of study below), Master's degree (Specify field(s) of study below)

    Other Education & Formal Training Bachelor's degree in the following field(s) of study:
    Communications, Journalism, Public Relations or other related degree required.

    Master's degree in the following field(s) of study: Communications, Journalism, Public Relations or other related degree preferred. Computer Skills Word-Processing, Presentation, Desktop Publishing, Other - Web page maintenance preferred. Internet search and Social Media knowledge. Experience Four (4) years experience in progressively more responsible public relations, journalism or related position required.

    Three (3) years professional experience in news writing and publication production required.

    Knowledge of AP Style required.

    Ability to be self-directed and make independent, strategic decisions.

    Knowledge of and experience with news media operations, procedures and protocols.

    Two (2) years editing experience; four (4) years preferred.

    Two (2) years of social media experience preferred.

    Two (2) years of crisis communication experience preferred.

    Experience with managing media monitoring, reporting, aggregating platforms such as Meltwater, Cision, etc. preferred.

    Experience with content management system preferred.
    Experience managing digital content preferred.

    Supervisory experience preferred.

    Knowledge of media monitoring software preferred.
