    Department Summary

We sustain lively, contemporary, and rigorously demanding MA and PhD programs in German, including a 5 year BA/MA program. In all programs, we value giving our students individual attention and active mentorship and advising. We have close interrelationships with relevant Departments and other units around the campus, including Comparative Literature, Cinema Studies, Philosophy, the School of Music and Dance, the School of Design, etc. In addition, the online literature-and-theory journal Konturen is housed in our Department.

Within and around German and Scandinavian Studies, our faculty members work in diverse areas such Judaic Studies (including Yiddish), Decolonial Criticism and Africa Studies, Psychoanalysis, and Fantasy Studies. We have a long and venerable history in offering Nordic languages and cultural materials (literature, film, social history), and we seek out opportunities for sustaining dialogue between German and Scandinavian Studies wherever possible (see vol. 17 of Konturen at ). In Scandinavian, we focus on both medieval and modern periods, and in the latter both in literature and film. In addition to this Career Instructorship, we currently have two tenured Scandinavianists in the Department.
