    Job Summary
    A surgery technician provides assistance in the operating room. These individuals work under the supervision of surgeons, anesthesiologist and nurses. They care for patients during the surgical /procedure. Surgery technicians can work in ambulatory (River View, Pavilion) or the hospital setting (Main OR). The surgery technician plans, implements, evaluates patient care along with other team members. They accept responsibility for collaboration with co-workers in the implementation of care.
    This position is responsible for providing optimum levels of care as the patient's transition through their stay.

    All the duties and standards within this job description will be performed according to the established policies and guidelines outlined in the department and Center policy and procedure manuals.

    These will be measured through surveys, department goals, peer input, expectation and experience.
    Customer Relations

    While performing the above, the employee will enhance positive relations with all customers including but not limited to: patients, families, hospital and medical staff.

    Team Member Relations and Quality of Service

    This position will willingly share knowledge with others, promote and support new roles, assist in staffing needs, maintain safe environment, all to facilitate meeting organizational goals.

    Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance to the established FMC policies, procedures and guidelines.
    Job Qualifications

    Education:
    High school graduate or equivalent. Graduate of a surgical technician accredited program required. Attends in-services to maintain professional standards.

    Licensure & Certifications:
    CPR certification. Certification (CST) required.

    Experience:
    Previous OR experience preferred.
    Job-related Skills: Good basic clinical skills in delivering of care in an ambulatory and inpatient care facility.

    Strong interpersonal, communication and presentation skills; ability to problem-solve and facilitate resolution to issues; demonstrates ability to handle multiple priorities; ability to make independent decisions.

    Essential Job Functions

    Job Expectations and Responsibilities:

    • Planning
    A. Prepare the operating/procedure room and surgical equipment.
    B. Demonstrates collaborative interdepartmental planning in identifying and meeting patient-family centered needs and awareness of the nursing care plan.
    C. Communicates with patient and practitioner through pre-operative planning.

    • Implementation
    A.

    Provides care appropriate in a non-judgmental, nondiscriminatory manner that is sensitive to the needs of all ages, preserving their autonomy, dignity and rights.

    Identify age requirements (infant to geriatric) using clinical data and patient needs.
    B. Passes tools to surgeons during an operation and helps control equipment such as lights, bovie or suction.
    C. ssist with safe transfer of the patient to the operating room table.
    D. ssists in positioning patient safely for the procedure to prevent injury or harm.
    E. Participates in the physician-led time-out.
    F. Initiates appropriate emergency procedures in collaboration with the physician; including BLS.
    G.

    Ensures patient's rights are respected and protects patient privacy by adhering to HIPPA guidelines in the management of all patient information.

    6. Evaluation
    A. Evaluates and assesses interventions and participates in the briefing/debriefing process.
    B. Practices positive responses to job demands and changes through organization and time management.
    C. Facilitates safe and effective follow-up care through verbal hand off communication.

    • Other position responsibility
    A. ttends various unit, division or committee meetings as designated by the manager or clinical charge nurse.
    B. ssures equipment and supplies are readily available for patient care, reporting malfunctions to proper department.

    Utilizes resources effectively and efficiently to enhance positive outcomes in patient care, addresses unit needs and supports the Center's mission.

    D.

    Participates in and fosters an approach to continuously improving quality through Six Sigma methodology that includes both intradepartmental and interdepartmental activities.

    Ensures patient rights are respected and protects patient privacy by adhering to HIPPA guidelines in the management of all patient information.

    E. The candidate will successfully complete yearly competencies to secure and maintain the position.
    F. Employee will implement, evaluate and revise annual self-development goals as outlined on previous Performance Appraisal.
    Physical Capacity Demand

    Heavy Work:

    Exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

    Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Medium Work.
