    General Statement of Duties

    The Casting Technician is responsible for application and removal of casts, splints, Durable MedicalEquipment (DME), external fixation devices, wound vacuums (VAC), and wound dressings. TheTechnician supports orthopedic casting needs such as, but not limited to; fabricating custom-moldedrigid splints, orthoses, adaptive equipment for children with special needs, utilizing cast saw, sutureremoval kits, and other equipment as directed by physicians. The Casting Technician must know thecharacteristics of plaster, fiberglass and thermoplastics for various applications and apply clinicalknowledge of potential complications and consequent interventions associated with orthopediccasting and surgical procedures.The Casting Technician oversees and trains clinic staff and medical students in cast tech proceduresand proper DME application as directed.

    Essential Duties:
    1. Applies and removes casts, splints, fixators, and wound vacuums (VAC) as directed by provider. Fabricates custom-molded rigid splints, orthoses, and adaptive equipment for children with special needs. Removes sutures, perform wound checks, and communicates concerns with providers. Utilizes cast aw, minor procedures set, forearm reduction units, manual traction and other equipment as directed by physician. Anticipates provider needs, including; assisting with positioning patients, dressing changes, suture and stable removal, preparing injections utilizing aseptic techniques, sterile procedures, closed reductions and debridement. Performs minor surgical procedures under provider supervision. Assists with custom brace orders by consulting with providers on appropriate bracing and preforming required measurements. Evaluates gait, including; gait training, gait analysis and subsequent corrective recommendations.
    2. Demonstrates critical thinking skills to ensure patient's specific needs are met. Applies knowledge of potential complications and consequent interventions associates with orthopedic casting and surgical procedures.
    3. Oversees medical supply, DME and medication storage room. Performs quarterly inventory and update DME inventory management system. Establishes par levels and makes adjustments as necessary. Reviews and adheres to drug and medical budget in collaboration with the department leadership. Understands and monitors monthly budgets, assists with budget variances when needed, places weekly orders, suggests cost savings opportunities, and follows proper ordering processes.
    4. Ensures proper documentation including photos, detailed medical documentation, evaluation, history of prior care, wound measurements, treatment plans, compliance and exudate between patient, providers, and support staff.
    5. Utilizes Copper and Allscripts to capture billing codes, advanced beneficiary notices (ABN), and proof of delivery documentation for cast and splint applications and supplies, DME application, and injections at time of patient visit. Resolves all charge inaccuracies with charge posting staff. Understands and ensures maximum reimbursement for DME with proper coding and use of explosion codes. Communicates items changes or requests to department leadership.
    6. Manages and resolves patient concerns stemming from cast room procedures and DME. Outlines the care and gives instructions regarding cast complications to patients wearing casts. Facilitates follow-up with patient, clinic staff, and providers to ensure patient satisfaction. Apprises department leadership of resolutions.
    7. Participates in Annual Education Fair and attends quarterly meetings. Develops content for education fair, and teaches clinical staff best practice processes, sterile field, autoclave, medication management, and refrigeration policies. Oversees and trains clinic staff and medical students in cast room procedures. Trains clinic staff on proper techniques, including; cast room protocols, suture removal, wound care and DME application.
    8. Maintains monthly autoclave and medication logs. Logs all medication and documents lot numbers and communicates concerns to avoid medication waste. Rotates medication stock to avoid expired meds.
    9. Adheres to all established policies and processes to ensure safety and compliance.
    Requirements:
    • High School Diploma or GED required; Associate's or Bachelor's degree preferred
    • Ortho Tech Certification preferred
    • 1-2 years related experience required; casting experience strongly preferred
    • Related certification from one of the following: Orthopedic Technologist, Medical Assistant, Cast Technician or Certified Athletic Trainer must be obtained within 1 year
