    General Description:Provide comprehensive school health services to students in assigned schools: professional nursing assessment, appropriate nursing care and medical referrals, and follow-up of identified problems. The school nurse serves as a liaison between the home, school, community, and healthcare providers.

    Essential Job Functions:
    • Performs health appraisals of students, including complete health history, screening activities (vision, dental, hearing, scoliosis, height, weight, blood pressure, developmental neurological) and physical assessment for early identification of potential health problems which would impede a child's educational performance and progress;
    • Implements referrals and follow-up for identified deficiencies for promotion of early correction to allow students to function to their optimal potential;
    • Provides emergency and temporary care for the sick and injured, and administers skilled nursing care for pupils as indicated and special treatments as prescribed by a medical provided;
    • Maintains a schedule to review student files for all students in grades PK-12;
    • Contacts parents/guardians regarding all issues related to health records and documentation as required by local, state, and school policy, to include newly enrolled students, PK and K registrations, and immunization requirements for all students enrolled in grades PK-12;
    • Screens pupil health records to identify chronic health problems, health status and immunization status;
    • Provides case management activities and develops/implements plan of care for students with chronic diseases who require specialized nursing care/monitoring at school.
    • Makes home visits to discuss health concerns and needs of students with parents to promote family involvement;
    • Assists parents in obtaining necessary medical evaluations by referral to existing community resources. Refers to appropriate agencies for financial assistance. Assists/facilitates assistance with transportation on a limited basis;
    • Participates in Medicaid billing activities specifically related to skilled nursing, health assistant services, and EPSDTs. Responsibilities include, but may not be limited to, nursing assessment, development of care plans, participation in IEP committees, documentation of services and supervision and training of non-licensed school board employees who provide health assistive care;
    • Utilizes community resources effectively in helping to meet the health needs of students: health and social service agencies, mental health professionals, private physicians and other medical care providers;
    • Provides individual health education and health counseling to students, parents and school personnel regarding health concerns and issues;
    • Act as a resource person in the areas of alcohol and drug awareness, first aid, nutrition, CPR, and AIDS awareness;
    • Provides health education and resource materials to students in the classroom on general health, fitness, nutrition, dental care, personal hygiene, self-esteem, substance abuse, Family Life Education and other topics in a comprehensive health education curriculum as schedule allows;
    • Provides mandated and needed in-service/training for parents and faculties;
    • Serves as a resource person to teachers and administrators in the control of communicable disease, in suspected cases of child abuse and neglect and in interpretation of local and state health policies and requirements. Consults with local health department as necessary;
    • Participates as the health professional on the school's Health Advisory Committee (or related teams/committees), and interdisciplinary team to evaluate students with learning and school difficulties. Participates in Child Study Eligibility, IEP, and other school committees relating to health and safety as schedule permits;
    • Assist with the development of 504 plans;
    • Serve as the primary contact for employees who have experienced a work related accident and/or injury;
    • Assists school personnel needing vaccinations, e.g. Hepatitis-B, pertussis booster (Tdap) etc. with obtaining these shots;
    • Inspects schools and departments (e.g. transportation, maintenance, and food services) quarterly for compliance with OSHA standards. Inform principals and department heads of deficiencies as needed. Update training and train all new staff as needed;
    • Maintains state mandated staff certification in CPR and first aid; provide training to staff when necessary;
    • Works cooperatively with other members of the school staff;
    • Performs other duties as assigned.
    Budgetary Responsibility: Coordinate ordering necessary products, supplies, and services with head school nurse.

    Supervision: Supervise students that are under the immediate care (to include students in the clinic and/or those on established medical care plans).

    Requirements/Qualifications:
    • Certification/Licensure: Must be licensed in the State of Virginia as an LPN or RN.
    • Previous school experience preferred, not required.
    LANGUAGE SKILLS

    Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

    MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

    Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

    REASONING ABILITY

    Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

    CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

    LPN or RN license required.

Lifting or moving children to wheelchair, table, desk, or assisting with bathroom/hygiene. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. The employee must be able to push items of 50 pounds such as pushing a child on a bike or swing, or moving/rearranging furniture. Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, and ability to adjust focus.

    Must be able to work both inside and outside and within various degrees of noise, temperature, and air quality. Interruptions are routine and flexibility and patience are required. Must be self-motivated and able to complete job assignments under stressful conditions. After hour work may be required.

    TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

    10 month contract. 190 days.

    EVALUATION

    Performance on this job will be evaluated in accordance with school board policy and administrative regulations on evaluation of personnel.
