    General Purpose:

    This job description is intended to cover the minimum essential duties assigned on a regular basis. Caregivers may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned by their leader. Leadership has the right to alter or modify the duties of the position.


    The Office of the Vice President and General Counsel ("OGC") at the University of Michigan (University or U-M) is conducting a search for an experienced medical malpractice attorney to serve as a Regional Associate General Counsel.

    The successful candidate will provide counsel and support to the University's fully integrated academic medical center ("Michigan Medicine") and its state-wide clinical enterprise ("U-M Health").

    Specifically, this attorney will focus on managing medical malpractice claims and litigation on behalf of the U-M Health Regional Network, which currently includes U-M Health Sparrow and U-M Health West.

    The successful candidate must be able to work independently on a wide range of medical malpractice and health system risk issues, with a focus on managing medical malpractice pre-suit claims and litigation consistent with the Michigan Model and in collaboration with other OGC System Associate General Counsel who specialize in these matters.

    The role will be tailored to the unique qualifications and experiences of the selected candidate as those talents relate to client needs and other OGC team members' areas of expertise and workloads.

    This attorney will report to the Managing Regional Associate General Counsel.

    The incumbent may have their primary office location at either U-M Health Regional Network office locations (Lansing or Grand Rapids).

    The incumbent should expect regular travel between the two offices to meet the needs of U-M Health Regional Network leadership as well as at least once-per-month travel to Ann Arbor.

    The OGC follows a hybrid model with onsite, in-the-office presence on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of each week.

    Job Requirements

    General Requirements

    • Member in good standing of the State Bar of Michigan or eligibility for admission. Work Experience
    • Minimum ten (10) years of significant experience managing medical malpractice claims and/or malpractice litigation in Michigan is required
    Preferred:


    • Experience working with academic medical centers and/or public entities.
    • First chair trial experience. Education
    • Juris Doctor Degree from an A.B.A. accredited law school. Specialized Knowledge and Skills
    • Must have a good working knowledge of HIPAA, the Michigan Public Health Code, electronic medical records, and professional liability law.
    • Must be able to work effectively with senior level health care executives, physicians, and other health care professionals.
    • This attorney must be able to interact with a high degree of professionalism with the plaintiff's bar, defense attorneys, the judiciary, and representatives and committees throughout Michigan Medicine
    Preferred:


    • Desired traits for a candidate include the; accomplishing assignments with minimum supervision; excellent written and verbal communication skills; excellent organizational skills; maintaining a positive attitude; working productively with many individuals on a project; excellent problem solving skills; ability to meet deadlines and handle multiple projects; and proficiency in legal research, including Lexis, Westlaw and other research tools, as well as file and document management technology.
