    Job Description

    Position Summary:

    Ideal candidate would be someone interested in a career in business law looking for greater exposure to the functioning of the judiciary while obtaining a law degree, or immediately after completion of law school. Potential for job growth and additional work responsibilities, including trial work, legal research, and drafting opinions. Short-term employment options available.

    This is specialized work functioning as a personal aide to a member of judiciary in the Commerce Program of the Civil Trial Division, Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas. Important aspects of the job involve drafting opinions; reviewing and providing written recommendations for motions; conducting legal research; drafting orders; proofreading opinions and orders; cite-checking; fielding questions from counsel; assistance to courtroom operations; providing essential connection between chambers and courtroom; file preparation; and performing various other duties as assigned. An employee in this class is directly responsible to and serves at the discretion of the appointing judge.

    Essential Functions:

    The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Actively participates in courtroom operations; remains in the courtroom at all times while court is in session unless specifically instructed by the appointing judge. required.
  • Performs related duties as required.
  • Provides all necessary logistical support for judge's work in courtrooms.
  • Maintains chambers filing system.
  • Manages judicial correspondence and other office paperwork.
  • Searches for and studies legal records and documents to obtain data applicable to cases under consideration.
  • Assists judicial law clerks in setting up court matters and file preparation.
  • Legal research and writing projects available to an employee who is interested in receiving those additional assignments. Performs related duties as required.

    Competencies, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a self-directed fashion.
  • Ability to learn and apply, within a reasonable period of time, the components and functions of criminal courtroom proceedings and related computer systems.
  • Ability to learn trial procedures, rules, and regulations required to facilitate court proceedings.
  • Ability to follow written and oral directions and to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the members of the judiciary, attorneys, associates, employees, and the general public.

    Work-Life:

    Working hours are 40 hours per week. This is a full-time, in person position with the First Judicial District of Pennsylvania.

    Qualifications

    1. High school diploma or equivalent required.

    2. Graduate of a law school, preferred; or a currently enrolled law student who is available to work full time during business hours, preferred.

    3. Demonstrated commitment to public interest is a plus.

    4. Appropriate experience in the use of Windows Software applications.

    5. Must successfully complete a criminal background investigation.

    6. Ability to perform the essential functions of a position in this class.

    7. Covid-19 vaccination recommended.
