    Job Summary

    The Editor/Proofreader is responsible for proofing all labeling generated by Label Design & User Information Development (LDUID) (e.g., product labels, package inserts, user's manuals, release notes, quick reference guides, and online help). The Editor/Proofreader supports Labeling Specialists, Technical Writers, Desktop Publishers and the Translation team by ensuring all labeling meets Regulatory/Corporate/Global requirements and departmental style guides. Works with some supervision, receiving direction on initiation of new projects and on actions to be taken at various developmental stages. The editor/proofreader will be responsible for making edits to the source files of documents being proofread.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    • Ensures that all labeling meets regulatory and corporate requirements and production specifications in a timely manner in accordance with requestor's instructions and departmental SOPs.
    • Performs both manual and automated proofreading tasks.
    • Proofreads assigned materials for accuracy, regulation adherence, clarity and consistency of brand, content and format.
    • Checks vendor proofs (blue-lines) against approved labeling documents to ensure accuracy of vendor production.
    • Makes edits in the documents that are being proofread to expedite the completion of the documents.
    • Maintains and distributes updates of the departmental style guide and related resource material including trademarks, bylines and company addresses.
    • Proposes and evaluates potential changes in editorial policy in response to changes in authoring and production tools.
    • Prepares and maintains SOPs for the proofreading process.
    • Keeps abreast of the basic requirements for compliance in own area of work and complies with those requirements; participates as required in training on regulatory issues affecting own area of work; brings regulatory compliance questions/issues to the attention of management.
    • Promotes a safe work environment and may provide recommendations on maintaining the safety of the work environment; addresses corrective actions whenever a hazard is identified; notifies management of all observed hazardous conditions or unsafe work practices.
    • Performs other related duties and assignments as assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications

    • English as a primary language; knowledge of spelling, grammatical rules, composition and style.
    • Knowledge of Corporate, Regulatory and Global (ISO, PAL, etc.) guidelines pertinent to product/package labeling desired.
    • Demonstrated experience in printing or publishing with knowledge of standard printing procedures.
    • Digital content experience.
    • Ability to handle multiple projects with excellent follow-up skills.
    • Must have a functional knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (MS Word, MS Excel).
    • Must be detail-oriented, have the ability to work under deadline pressure; and must be able to deal with unresolved situations, frequent changes, delays, or unexpected events.
    • Must have ability to perform spreadsheet and database maintenance for reporting the status of projects to management.
    • Must have good interpersonal skills, including effective written and oral communication ability.
    • Accountable for the professional representation of BD as carried out by the Regulatory Compliance Department.
    • Knowledge and experience in DTP software applications (InDesign, Frame maker, Illustrator, Mad Cap Flare) and label printing technology desirable.
    • Foreign language skills desirable.
    • Healthcare industry background desirable.

    Education And Experience

    Typically requires an Associate's degree in Journalism, English, Communications, Science or a related field with a minimum of two years' experience in proofreading, editing or copy writing; or equivalent combination of related education and experience.
